Jersey Purchasing
« on: June 10, 2010, 04:11:59 pm »
In no sport is purchasing a jersey at higher risk than baseball. At any given moment a guy you think is the future of your team can be traded, get hurt or inexplicably start to suck. Look at John Lannan (don't make this thread about Lannan just an example) he is a guy that I thought could be in our rotation for 10 years the way he was pitching the last 2 but now people are calling for his head. ZMNN and Det got hurt or could be traded for Oswalt etc... the list of reasons not to buy a jersey can go on and on.
That being said I absolutely have to buy an authentic road jersey. Can I feel safe with Storen having the number 58 for the long-haul? Can I be sure that Ian and/or Roger are gonna last long enough to justify the purchase? I already have a Zimm and everyone and their brother has a Straz so I would like to avoid that. Someone please help me out here.

Everyone will look at you if you are wearing a Wil Nieves jersey.

Why not just pick a number you like?  Or a number you wore in high school/college?  It doesn't have to have a name on it either.  I have an authentic road grey #42 jersey and it doesn't say "Robinson" on it.

I wouldn't even buy a #11 Zimmerman jersey.  Go for the team and not just an individual player.  If you really must get a particular player go with a Walter Johnson or Frank Howard jersey - someone who personnifies the team.

I thought about Johnson but I want to get a current National or future National to be along the ride with him. I understand the concept of getting a legend but I want to support the guy now. With the Redskins (before we got divorced) if I know we are going to run the ball alot I wore CP's jersey, if the other team had a top flight WR I rocked my Champ Bailey with pride etc... I need diversity. My Zimm is the mainstay but I need something else and idk what. The blank jersey doesn't do anything for me, makes me feel indecisive. As for Nieves, I think I would have to kick my own ass for wearing that.

Lately I've seen several "Screech" jerseys (and one "Parrothead" so that's taken).  How about Livo?  He might get traded, but he'll be back.

I don't think anyone is safe except Zimmerman. Desmond has looked good and i think he will continue to grow but he could be traded for a starting pitcher if they think Espinosa will be better or he could fall off a cliff with the bat and not even be able to hit around .260 anymore. Pudge might be a good idea since he is a HOF and has had such an impact on the team.

But that's just it.  You, yourself said, "In no sport is purchasing a jersey at higher risk than baseball. At any given moment a guy you think is the future of your team can be traded, get hurt or inexplicably start to suck."

Jackie Robinson has nothing to do with the Nationals but I bought it because he's iconic.

Or you can just pick a number you like and have no name on it whatsoever.  If you like a particular player, get his number and not his name so in the event he gets traded or starts to suck you're still supporting the team and not just the individual.

Personally, I hate that teams put the names on the jerseys to begin with.  One of the few things I appreciate about teams like the Yankees and Red Sox is that they leave the names off the jerseys and make the name on the front more important than the name on the back.

I like some uniqueness in my jersey selection, hence the obscure but oh so appealing MacDougal original I sport for important games.

See I love the inventiveness but it is rarely rewarded with long-term success. I bought a Rock Cartwright jersey his rookie year and he was a 7th rd pick that ended up on the roster for 7 years. Now THAT was a diamond in the rough. I was thinking Bernadina but I am just not certain on him yet. I guess Storen. I like the name on the jersey, it means to me that is a guy that you LOVE and root for especially hard. Not to take anything away from the team itself but you specifically root for him as well as the team

The way I view my jersey buying is: When this player is gone, will people remember him?

My first jersey was a black Konerko. Then I got a road Jenks. I've been wanting a white Danks for years, but was always afraid he'd get traded. Also, he hadn't been around long enough for me to feel comfortable that people would remember him. He's been spectacular this year, so I'll probably pull the trigger sometime soon.

Unfortunatly for the Nats, it seems like there is no franchise player like Konerko on the team. Zimmermann may be the closest and you already have that jersey. Strasburg may be a good choice, though I would make sure he doesn't flame out. Also with that, I know I like to have jerseys that everyone else doesn't have. That's why I never even considered a Beckham or Quentin. (Konerko being a small expection because it was my first and because I really like Konerko). Maybe you're the same way.

I think the short of it is, there is no really same Nats jersey right now. Either take a chance or hold off.

Which is it? Before you were nagging about about jerseys being "higher risk" and now you want "be along the ride with him".

I think this all comes down to SIC (Section 214 is cheap). ;)  :)

Maybe I belong on the island of misfit Nats fans.

Truth is, I won the game worn, autographed jersey in a drawing the Nats hold at each season end to benefit a charity.  But it beats the hell out of a Saul Rivera.

(Jordan) Zimmermann isn't close to being a franchise player, he was barely up in the majors before his ligament blew out and he had Tommy John surgery.  (Ryan) Zimmerman, on the other hand, IS in fact our franchise player, and even bears the nickname "Peter Franchise", bequeethed by Nyjer Morgan, who is the straw that stirs the nickname drink.

As a Sox fan, I have no love for Mike "Stinky Beard" MacDougal. Infact, I have much distain. Whenever MacDougal came into the game, we were conceding the game.

I meant the Zim with 1 "n".

I bought Lannan and Flores jerseys in their rookie reasons (I got Lannan when he switched to 31). I def do not regret those purchases. For Storen, I talked to him and he's stickin with 58 for now but we know 26 is his number and Flores is currently using it on the DL.

That being said I have a Soriano, Milledge, and Wilkerson jersey, but I still love those, they are so nice.

I also have a Zim spring training one and a Guzman in the old away jerseys.

Frankly I don't care that much if I get a jersey of a guy and he leaves the team. I have so many shirts of people who have left (obviously a lesser investment) and I really like having them).

I'm trying to decide between a Zach Day jersey and a Terrmel Sledge. I was considering Tomo Ohka, but I lost all respect for him when he flipped the ball to Frank Robinson after he pulled him from the game.

Pudge would be a good one.  HOF, even if most of his career is not associated with the Nats.  On SoSH, there is a thread with pictures of players in uniforms you'd never associate with them (Tom Seaver and Orlando Cepeda as Red Sox and the like).  If the Nats take off over the next year or so, I think a lot of people here will remember the Pudge transfusion and recognize the jersey and what it means.

BTW - On Strasmas, I saw someone wearing an Expos "8" for Carter.
