you can't have a top 3 guitar riffs without "smoke on the water"

I heard a guy play it on the violin tonight in an Italian restaurant.

This probably doesn't compare but the song: [2080 by Yeasayer] has a pretty sick riff.

"The Stone" by DMB. Probably my favorite song.

Watch his hands. Pretty crazy. I can play this, but not like that.

Hendrix, "All Along the Watchtower"

That's a Dylan cover.

Chief, what's the punishment for such an offense?

No crap, Sherlock LOL

I'd actually say that of retreads with some sort of a Hendrix connection, one of the best might be Body Count's cover of "Hey Joe"...of course that was not a Hendrix original either, though very few people seem to know that.

That's a Dylan cover.

To keep the pressure on Ali, Higher Ground is a Stevie Wonder cover.

I think maybe Iommi should be immortalized and removed from consideration. Even the new Heaven and Hell album has riffs that most other guitar players couldn't dream of coming up with.

It's about riffs, not lyrics or melody.  Hendricks' riffs are his own.

Yes, but the bass line was played on a synthesizer by Stevie, not on an electric bass.

upon further reflection:

1. Smoke on the Water - Blackmore/Deep Purple
2. Don't Fear the Reaper - Blue Oyster Cult led by Gene Frenkle
3. Sunshine of your love - Eric Clapton / Cream

WTF imref? You ninja-edited Cocaine to Sunshine of My Love? When White Room has the best riff anyway?

i edited about 2 seconds after I posted and you had already responded.  You are too quick. :-)

How about we call it a toss-up between white room, cocaine, and sunshine of my love?

BTW, Rush's limelight deserves some sort of honorable mention.

Yeasayer is awesome. I saw them in concert once, 2080 is one of my favorite songs.
