That's it.  5th no-hitter of the season.

so how many no hitters have there been this year?

and right after the entire steroid issue starts to die down with increased testing and consequences.

but steroids don't help you hit a baseball.

are the pitchers that much better this year? or are the hitters worse for some reason? :stir:

Haren got nailed by a liner in the bicep. He got taken out of the game.

Pitching pretty well until that point. 8/0 K/BB.

Defense is better this year.  In the last couple of years there's been a growing recognition that defense was significantly undervalued, and teams have rushed towards better fielding players.  Poster child for the improvement?  San Diego Padres.

Yes, but Buchholz was better!

So much for TB trading Garza.

Looks like Chris Coughlan is headed to the DL after he injured his knee in an abortive shaving cream postgame celebration.

SAN FRANCISCO -- Excessive celebration after a dramatic walk-off win has proven costly for the Marlins.

During the elation in the aftermath of the Marlins' 5-4 win over the Braves in 11 innings Sunday afternoon at Sun Life Stadium, Chris Coghlan was injured while attempting to smash a shaving-cream pie in the face of Wes Helms, who delivered the walk-off single.

After the Marlins edged the Giants, 4-3, on Monday night at AT&T Park, the club announced Coghlan was going on the disabled list with a torn meniscus to his left knee.

If surgery is required, the team's starting left fielder and leadoff batter will be out six to eight weeks.

Replacing Coghlan on the roster is highly touted prospect Logan Morrison, who will have his contract selected from Triple-A New Orleans.

"When Wes hit the walk-off, I went to pie him in the face," Coghlan said. "When I jumped, I landed wrong on my knee. That's how I got injured."

Man if that isnt' every team (and fan's) nightmare.

Also 7 hits and 2 ER in 4.2 IP isn't that great is it?  Granted I don't pay much attention to other teams, so maybe that's an improvement for him.

Ah, didn't even notice how many hits he had given up. Just saw the 8/0 line with only 2 runs given up and figured he was having a great night.

There was a homer too, so that might account for the runs.  Like I said I'm not really familiar with Haren so I don't know what constitutes a good outing for him.  I just remember hearing his name a lot so I assumed he was ace-ish.

Fangraphs spitting out more information on why Haren struggling is just random.

http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/index.php/acceptingrandomness/

I feel like this could be applied to any pitcher. Even one John Lannan.

Of course, with Lannan, they'd say the success part of Lannan's career was the random part, but you get my point.

This is refreshing to see.

From rotoworld.com

Andrew Marchand of ESPN New York reports that the Yankees are one of the six teams on Joakim Soria's no-trade list.

The Yanks are on an ongoing hunt to bolster their bullpen, but may have to look at options other than Soria. He would probably cost them a little too much in the way of prospects anyway. The 26-year-old Royals closer has a 2.12 ERA and 1.01 WHIP for his career and has converted 99 saves since the start of the 2008 season. He's 27-for-29 on save opportunities this year.

Gotta love the mets

http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2010/07/mets-seek-overpriced-underperforming-pitcher.html

Quote
The Mets are quite concerned about their 2011 ticket sales, writes Joel Sherman of the New York Post.  That concern could compel them to make a trade, but Sherman says their target is modest:

What I hear is the Mets are trying to locate a pitcher (probably a reliever) who is overpriced and not having a particularly strong season, but who their scouts like and pluck him for little to no prospect in return.

I can't speak for the Mets' scouts, but relievers Kerry Wood and Chad Qualls might fit the description.

Must be nice to have a team that contends and goes out and acquires pieces to further the cause.  :?

I wonder how bad it's going to be when its Lebron wearing the Heat jersey. Could Gilbert actually say we're not bothering with extra security for that game and it would be a shame if anything happened

I wouldn't be so sure about the Phillies. Remember, they'll have Halladay and Oswalt for a few years, but their farm system is basically empty now. They've traded away almost every prospect worth keeping (there's some HR-happy outfielder left) in pursuit of Halladay, Oswalt, and a pitcher they don't even have anymore.

but they are set up to compete for at least a few years, I'd rather be in their position than ours

for now they are competing every year, I'd trade a potentially decent GM (who knows at this point) and staring a third straight 100 loss season in the face for a terrible GM and a world series win and two WS appearences, a team with two legitimate aces, the best secondbaseman in the game and basically the same first baseman we have. They may suck down the road, but for now their fans get to watch a competitive team now; we get to watch a terrible team now and we may still suck down they road.
