The kindle 3.0 will slay it. Online book shopping on the kindle is superior to music shopping on iTunes by a huge margin. There's wild rumors for kindle 3.0 anyway, and reading a book on non-eink is non-negotiable for me.

Apple has, officially, jumped the shark.

There's nothing particularly special about this device. Unless it's rock bottom priced, this is a whole lot of nothing.

I just think priceing books at $13-$15 instead of $10 is not a great way to get market share.

The iPad sounds like a Kindle combined with some smart phone capabilities. Too bad my phone and Kindle combined cost less than this thing will. There's nothing "revolutionary" about this at all.

Not to mention its too big to really carry around in your pocket, in my mind, that puts it in competition with larger devices. If I want something to display .pdfs, surf the net, and write e-mails for a thousand dollars, I'll get a laptop that can actually do all of those things well.

With limits like 10 hour battery and 64 GB local storage, I'd rather just buy a 12-13" notebook. Or an iPod touch.

A kindle does that pretty nicely for 259 dollars.

A 2 day battery and cloud storage come with the kindle.

Of course, the next logical product is the iPud.

Right, depends on your needs. I'm still trying to give them the benefit of the doubt that this thing is more than just a giant ipod e-reader... though it's not looking like it. Doesn't seem even remotely possible that the price will be reasonable.

you don't even need a big e-book reader. I read books (granted without pictures) on kindle on my iphone all the time. I wonder if they'll allow the kindle app on the ipad

The Kindle DX has appeal for textbooks and side by side pages, I just didn't have the cash for it. I think the browser is better too.

Watched the video on Apple's site. No, Ive, it's not magical. But it is very smooth. I'd be tempted at a lower price.

The thing would be awesome if it were either cheaper or more open. $299 16GB would be mine. Maybe even at $399, but not $499. Or I would pay $499 for a 16GB model if I could install anything I wanted on it, and it was closer to a full on OS X device instead of iPhoneOS.

I'll have to play with one though, and see how it feels in real life. If the textbook deal goes through, I'd get one at $499. It'd save me money in the long term, textbooks are EXPENSIVE.

I don't like the name though. Has no one at Apple seen the skit? I'd prefer PADD. I'd totally get one then.
