I'm gonna get flamed for this - but Marquis is a team-first guy, a good guy in the clubhouse, and a nice guy. MOST IMPORTANTLY, he gets the job done, but those "peripheral" qualities add a lot.

well, I'll add my two cents to this and get flamed as well, because I think having a critical mass of team first good guys in the club house can make a big difference in the teams performance, it's not the only thing but this team needs to have an identity as a team.

Isn't there a press conference today with Marquis and the Nats at 2:30 pm today. Nobody's mentioned it - was it cancelled?

Lannan and Marquis both from NY and have a similar demeanor.

Nice 1-2 punch, at least for now.

showing highlights of Jason K'ing our lineup does not validate the fact that he can pitch

Did he say we're not going after any more starters or just that they'd checked off a need.  They said 1-2 starters after the season, so they could still go after another while still going after another starter...

If that's our only SP acquisition, I will skewer this team at the start of the season.

While it is disappointing if true, I still think this would be a successful offseason if we could add Capps. We now have our 2 big inning guys in Lannan and Marquis, and since we realistically arent going to be competing for a playoff spot, we can get a season in of 3 young guys (pick any combo) to see how they progress and find out if they will be in the pen or rotation for our 2011 playoff run.  ;)

I hope Marquis isn't the only SP signing. Its a great signing alone but what will our rotation look like to begin the year?

Lannan
Marquis
Detwiler
Stammen
Olsen

???

Thats like 2 solids and 3 maybes with one of those maybes just coming off of an injury year. Then we need to wait for Strasburg (probably)

What other starter could they sign that would fit realistically?

Garland and Pineiro are out of the equation I would believe. Is there any decent starter that would come here on a 1 year deal other than Livan?

As a few guys have mentioned, taking a flyer on one of the high reward injury guys would be worth taking a look at.  I'm not sure how realistic those are, but they'd be worth taking a shot at.

Maybe a Bedard? He wont be ready until the 2nd half though so that rules him out I guess...

Livan isn't decent. Also I'd imagine Sheets or Duchscherer would be available on a one year deal to rehab their value.

And why can't we add Piniero or Garland? Would it really hurt to have three tested MLB starters?

I think it depends on how many years Garland and Piniero are asking for.....actually now that I think about it, I thought I just read somewhere that Garland wants to stay out on the west coast?

I would be all for signing a Duchscherer or Sheets....I would think Sheets would want to go to a contender though...
