I think you'll see a lot of guys get a shot at the rotaion spot, including Stras.  May the best man win.

It is much better having young guys fight it out for the last two spots instead of Jason Simontachi, Mike Bacsik, and Tim Redding fighting it out. Or to be depending on John Patterson or Shawn Hill to remain healthy.

no matter what the nats do, gmu will complain about it. thats his MO.

Going to be tough to find everyone starts in ST. Tons of guys vying for 3 spots.

-Craig Stammen
-Collin Balester
-Garrett Mock
-Stephen Strasburg
-Shairon Martis
-Scott Olsen
-Ross Detwiler
-J.D. Martin
-Matt Chico

I imagine they will quickly move a couple of those guys to relief roles at the start of ST to get them work and narrow down the candidates for the rotation.

QFT. Slowly but surely you are seeing progress. Ridding ourselves of Minor League Trash, reclamation projects, and injury prone guys.

Right, great to see us bring some durability on board, you know, the Brian Lawrence type.

We've got a lot of Split Squad games this year that will help with that.  I don't think we had any of those last year.

Tim Dierkes is uninspired:

Quote
The Nationals will sign Jason Marquis, according to MASN.  It's a two-year deal, according to MLB Network's Hazel Mae.  Mark Feinsand of the New York Daily News pegs the value at $15MM (via Twitter).  The Phillies and Mets were other clubs reportedly in the mix for the 31-year-old righty.  Back on December 15th, Marquis explained to MLB.com's Bill Ladson that he found the ability to mentor the Nats' young pitching staff appealing.

Marquis racked up 216 innings for the Rockies this year with a 4.04 ERA, 4.8 K/9, 3.3 BB/9, and 55.6% groundball rate.  The Rox will receive a supplemental draft pick for their loss.  I have to wonder if Marquis agreed in advance to turn down their arbitration offer.

My take: this is an uninspired move by the Nationals.  I understand that an innings-eater is needed to take pressure off young pitchers, but it's likely that similar pitchers will be available in March at a fraction of the commitment.  Plus, unlike an Erik Bedard type gamble, Marquis doesn't have upside.

Rizzo putting his money where his mouth is. I'm not that pumped about it but I am glad that we signed a guy who was vocal in his desire to help younger pitchers.

well, it's good that we're doing something.  Marquis isn't a difference maker, but he'll improve the team and help out the younger pitchers.

Now lets get Garland, Capps, and Chapman!

The Nationals are like someone filing for bankrupcy in Vegas. They are in no position to gamble.

Upside is all in the eye of the beholder.  If we sign a guy that was better than any of our pitchers last season, that looks like upside to me.

Tim Dierkes is uninspired:

what similar pitchers is he referring to?

Fraction of the commitment?

2 years - $15 Million is nothing. What a bargain.

Is 2 years - $22 million for Dunn a bargain?

A little steep in money per year but at 2 years it is not bad at all.

Just glad we haven't given out any 3+ year contracts. 2 Year deals are much more preferable.

Byron Kerr: I spoke with Nationals' pitcher Jason Bergmann a few minutes ago who said, "I am excited that we are able to add a starting pitcher of his caliber. It is a good day for our team and our fan base. It shows the league that the Nats are serious about getting better and contending. Marquis is a top of rotation starter that can go deep into games. He was an all star last year and is a ground ball pitcher. He is a veteran presence on our pitching staff and can be a mentor for our younger players."

I liked the Bruney deal. I'm just complaining about overpaying for average players when you can get a player of similar production for a fraction of the cost.

Hello McFly! Marquis helps attract a Garland to DC. If they sign Garland, this club has a respectable major league roster.

Maybe they keep Bergmann around because he interviews so well. He's a smart guy.

You're way too caught up on geek-stats.  There is absolutely no guarantee that Stammen will ever figure out how to pitch to guys his third time through the order regardless of his shiny WHIP.

Marquis is average but remarkably consistent and much more likely not to suck.

I don't see any way they sign Garland after signing Marquis. I believe are done adding starters.

The most I could see us adding from here on is a Matt Capps (or comparable reliever) and a back-up middle infielder.
