This move probably moves Stammen into the bullpen. No way should Livan, Olsen, or Marquis be starting ahead of Stammen.

Livan?

huh. what are you talking about? Marquis is a winner, is durable, and is a decent mid-rotation pitcher.

I like Stammen too and think he can win a #4-5 spot.

Olsen will be lucky to make the team. Livan should NOT be signed.

Now Mrs. Stammen, your son has a fine career ahead of him, if he works hard and keeps his nose clean.

You certainly don't have a lot of faith in Stammen if you don't think he can win a starting job.

Good signing to get this team towards respectability.  A solid starter who has had some success in the past.  2 years is about what Marquis deserves.

Jason Marquis isn't anymore of a winner than Craig Stammen. It's easy to rack up wins when you play on good teams with solid lineups and bullpens. The guy was so much of a winner that he couldn't even make his teams playoff rotation. This hasn't even happened just one time, it happened multiple times. In 2002, 2003, 2006 (world series winner), and 2007 he didn't pitch an inning on a playoff team. In 2008 and 2009 he only pitched 1 inning in the playoffs. The guy has pitched on a playoff team for every year of his career, yet he only has 3 career postseason starts and hasn't made a postseason start since 2004. His postseason ERA is a mediocre 4.56.

Look at some of Marquis numbers:
ERA: 4.48
ERA+: 99 (below league average)
FIP: 4.88 (way below average)

His ERA in the 2nd half of last year was 4.56 with a 1.48 WHIP.

Nice job.  Get one more pitcher now.

Garland/Pineiro is the logical route, but here's a thought I had:

Trade Willingham and a lower prospect to the Red Sox for someone like Clay Buchholz or Michael Bowden.  Sign Holliday to replace Willingham.
Fixed

Though I don't think Hammer + Prospect would return Buckholz or Bowden...

Those numbers are better than any Nationals pitcher except Lannan.

He gives the Nats a workhorse and a guy that is very willing to lend himself to the younger guys on the staff.

He's no a stud but he's the type of pitcher that can help us.

They are very similar to Stammen's numbers and he is 6 years younger and a lot cheaper.

You said he was a winner. If so, why is it that almost all of his teams avoided using him in the playoffs?

There are still five spots in the rotation right?

How is signing Marquis taking starts away from Stammen. He is currently the third best starter on the team. Right now the rotation would be

Lannan
Marquis
Stammen
Detwiler
??????

Stammen doesn't half half the experience Marquis does. There is no comparison.

Career 4.48 ERA and 94-83 record.

This guy has been on winning teams. He has mentored young starters. Look what he did for Ubaldo Jimenez and Jorge De La Rosa in Colorado.

Exactly. We could still add another SP although after signing Marquis I can't see them being in the running for Garland or Davis anymore.

I hope to hell they don't sign Livan. I'd rather go with Marquis, Lannan, and then 3 of the pitchers we already have here.

Probably not Buchholz, maybe Bowden but it'd depend on the prospect.

Assuming that we don't bring in Garland or Davis, which of the prospects will fill the last two rotation spots? Mock and Detwiler?

I think you'll see a lot of guys get a shot at the rotaion spot, including Stras.  May the best man win.
