Chapman hires Hendricks brothers, signs with Reds

Knowing what SS signed for, what do you think is a fair offer for this guy?  He is very high risk IMO, but someone will pony up.

Guess the Nats aren't jumping to deal with the Hendricks brothers.

Just FYI that link doesn't work unless you're an "ESPN insider"

Sorry about that:

Aroldis Chapman's quest to find a major league team took another turn Saturday when the Cuban pitching phenom fired the representative who helped him gain free agency, according to ESPN The Magazine's Jorge Arangure Jr.

Edwin Mejia, of Athletes Premier International, had represented Chapman soon after he defected from the Cuban national team in July. Mejia had started negotiations with several major league teams, but Chapman switched to veteran agents Randy and Alan Hendricks.

The Hendricks will be looking for suitors, and Anthony McCarron of the NY Daily News writes that the race for Chapman will come down to the Boston Red Sox or New York Yankees. One caveat: McCarron writes that while Chapman is less of a finished product than Washington's Stephen Strasburg.

It's kinda like saying that someone is less of a man than Jesus. Nothing to be ashamed of.

I mean, the sentance in incomplete.  It's like me saying "While Nathan as a pretty good poster." and just ending it there.  I'm still waiting for rest of it, don't leave me hanging like that.

I agree with you..the sentence ticked me off as well.  (I read it three times thinking i was missing something).

I just rechecked and and it's been changed to, 'One caveat: McCarron writes that Chapman is less of a finished product than Washington's Stephen Strasburg.'

I'd be suprised if Chapman gets close to what he's going to ask for...from what I've seen and heard he is far from a sure thing at this point. He has very little track record. He's got a set of mediocre pitches, not so great control and a 100mph fastball. Thats not enough be a sure success in the major leagues.

totally agree.  When i started this thread, i was curious what people thought he would end up getting (dollars and years).  I thought someone would overspend on this guy and regret it.  But, it appears more and more that most teams are going on the cheap this year so he might get something a little more 'reasonable'.

if this were four years ago, he'd get like 45 mil. now he'll probably get a solid signing bonus and start out in the minors (something like what SS got)

he has more bargaining leverage than SS and a good track record international competition. He is much younger than Contreras or El Duque when they came over, and a live arm.  Lefty, too.  how many current lefty starters pitch consistently in the mid 90s?  CC and Kershaw are the fastest at 94.1 and 93.9 last year.  Figure someone will give him $25m Major league contract and get 3 - 8 years of MLB control of him. Contreras got 4 years, $32m in 2003.

Per MLBrumors:  Rizzo was there, as well as scouts from 14 other teams for Chapman's workout yesterday, apparently he impressed the scouts and is looking at $30 million.

How freaking awesome would it be to pick up Chapman and have he and Strasburg?

do you think a 15 million dollar offer is too high for Chapman?  According to the Rumor Central, the Hendricks Brothers screwed Chapman as well.  How do these a$$es get clients?

-----------
From insider:

As Jorge Arangure, Jr. wrote Monday, Aroldis Chapman is likely to lose as much as $3 million in taxes now that he's almost certain to not receive any pay for the year 2009.

Had Chapman signed a week ago and received his signing bonus, only his salary would have been taxable because he would not have actually worked in the U.S. until 2010. Now he will have signed and worked in the same year, which would cost him $2-3 million in taxes if he were to accept an offer similar to the one made by the Boston Red Sox of $15 million.

With just three days remaining in the year, it's highly unlikely that the necessary paperwork could be processed in time, even if the lefty were to sign a contract today.

Ok, when the Sox offered 15m, was that per year or for how many years? I understand he has a VERY high ceiling, so when we're hearing 15-20m, is that per year or total?

Can't find any reference on number of years on SoSH, so I'm guessing it was not leaked. My guess i smost of that would be in bonus.

Supposedly, he is looking for 5 years, per Jorge Arangure.  His guess is he ends up around $20 - 25 M.

Not at all.  A free agent has always had far more leverage than a draftee, or a player within the arbitration period.  Chapman has the ability to negotiate with 30 teams, Strasburg had 1.  But every free agent has the same advantage, and every draftee the same disadvantage.
