The Nationals are one of several teams who have expressed interest in free agent right-hander John Lackey, according to a baseball source.

The team is reportedly in competition with the Angels, Red Sox, Yankees and Mets for his services.

The Nationals are looking for an ace who can tutor pitchers such as John Lannan, Ross Detwiler and Stephen Strasburg. Washington has been looking for this type of pitcher since after the Trade Deadine. It ended up signing right-hander Livan Hernandez in late August. While he did a good job for the Nationals, it's less than 50-50 that he will return to the club.

Lackey, who is 31 years old, has played his entire eight-year career with the Angels. He has won 102 games and has averaged 187 innings per season. His best season was in 2007, when he went 19-9 with a 3.01 ERA with Los Angeles.

This is the second year in a row in which the Nationals have been players for a big-name free agent. The Nationals tried to sign Mark Teixeira last offseason, but he ended up signing with the Yankees.

Also in that article:

In other news, contrary to published reports, the Nationals do not have interest in shortstop Adam Everett. A baseball source said the Nationals would rather spend their money on pitching. While the Nationals like the defense Everett brings, they feel that he isn't going to bring much offense to the table. He is a .238 lifetime hitter.

As of now, the Nationals are going with Ian Desmond at short and switching Cristian Guzman from short to second. The Nationals have not ruled out getting veteran shortstop who can hit.

We'd better be freaking interested in the best pitcher on the FA market.

Why? This is nothing worth getting excited about. Talk to me when we put our money where our mouth is.

No, but...

Why? This is nothing worth getting excited about. Talk to me when we put our money where our mouth is and when Lackey takes it

Fixed and this.

Another?  When was the first?  I don't believe Teixeira was a ploy, I just think that nobody wants to play for a godawful last place team with a history of failure.

Mike Rizzo, you can give yourself about 5 years of leeway if you can pull this huge fish in.

No, I don't but it'd be bigger news if we WEREN'T interested in Lackey. We need pitching, we have money, and Lackey is the best. I would hope that our team is competent enough to express interest in the best FA.

Who's Lackey's agent?
Steve Hilliard. He's the agent for Hiroki Kuroda and Fukudome among others. Octagon Inc is the company: http://www.octagon.com/Default.aspx

No more interest. If you want him, Rizzo, make the top offer. Ok?

Well, this is a good thing.  Even if they don't get him, at least we know they have their eyes on the big fish.

I'd really appreciate it if they could make a serious run, if not win the sweepstakes.

Can't hurt!

Dibble is in love with Lackey by the way... so, on the off chance he signs, Dibble will be slurping him every chance he gets.

I wouldn't go over 9-10 million a year for Lackey. He's on the wrong side of 30, and by the end of his contract (most likely 5 years) there's a great chance he won't be worth his contract any longer.

Having said that, I'd welcome him with open arms.

We pay them alot of money to play for a bad team and they end up getting hurt....

Lets hope you are right and Lackey takes the money.

Silly Dunnkey.

For that comparison to work you would need to be one of thirty men left in the world collecting a harem of forty women. Granted it sounds good until you realize you'd still be the ugliest man in the world for the last few years running and everyone laughs at you.
