Author Topic: So, we're on to Riggleman... (Read 2335 times)

What happens if he pulls off the miracle goes 40-35 the second half? Just throwing out a hypothetical. I still think we're significantly better than our record indicates, not the mess that Kirkjuan claimed on the radio today. There are still significant holes to fill though, of that there is no question. But what if he does right the ship a bit and they finish the second half strong? Does Riggleman get a look or do they still go hard after someone like a Valentine or, well, I'm not even sure what the other options would be. I'm not wild on Hurdle. He got luck with one ridiculous run to the WS a couple of years ago, but not that long ago, Charlie Manuel and Terry Francona were thought to be worthless hacks.

there is no way this awful ass team will finish above .500 in the second half, especially if they trade away guys like Nick and Willingham.

We should obviously be better than the trainwreck first half but probably not anything crazy. something like 30-45.

Sportsfan is totally in midseason form. Remember when he was wide-eyed and optimistic during the offseason?

It's not like anyone can say the disillusionment isn't warranted, though. These team doesn't know its head from its ass.

Anyway, about Riggleman, I haven't really followed his managerial career much, but I've read that he's not the best manager, simply put. Maybe he'll surprise us. Who knows, but he can't possibly be WORSE than Acta, even if he's just status quo.

That wasn't what I was asking though. I don't want Riggleman as the next manager. I'm asking is there any way he sticks beyond this year?

If he manages to pull out a winning record in the second half and we dont give him at least another year, we're basically saying performance and winning don't matter.

Not necessarilly. He's got the interim tag. That means he's operating under the mize there's going to be a search in the first place. So, if they can get a splash hire, like a Valentine, it may not matter. And it doesn't even have to be +.500. It could just be 35-40. Something competitive. He'd have to be considered, wouldn't he?

If Riggleman coaxes improved performance from the team, he'll get serious consideration for a contract.

Righting this ship would be quite an accomplishment. If he manages to change the culture of this group of losers in the middle of the season and put up a winning record, he SHOULD be given serious consideration.

That being said, it will never happen.

Are you saying that Riggleman backstabbed Acta. No way, blue911 - Manny created his own train wreck, along with 5,000 other reasons, it was time for him to go.
Riggleman is an interim manager, and needs to remain as such,in my opinion, until they can find someone, say like Tony (whose contract expires at the end of this season with that "Other" Team), and throw alot of money at him to come to the Nats and produce a winning team, like he has in the past....... (Some people would say I am dreaming, but I think you should dream BIG)....or they could bring in......

He's gonna try and help the team Riggle out of a "historically bad" situation, and then we're going to hire a long-term manager in the Offseason.

Jim's not the long-term type. He's insurance.

Which arm? It makes a difference you know........

But seriously, where did you come up with that idea? Riggleman being "Old School", doesn't mean he will leave all starters out there for 8 innings, and then bring in a closer, for every game...............No way.

They've already talked about that -- shutting Zimmermann/Detwiler down after a certain # of IP, and bringing up Balester, Martin, etc.

here's the best of luck to jim riggleman

as i posted in the offseason, he's a local, good baseball mind and shows some fire.

not expecting anything earth-shattering but i think the guys are going to play harder, smarter and we'll win a good chunk of games in the 2nd half.

As happy as I am with the way Riggleman's run the team, it would be foolish to not consider many outside candidates this offseason.

In Rizzo's court. Next, most important decision of his tenure. No way it gets handed to Riggleman. Rizzo's not stupid. He would have to be convinced that the players they have and the players that he intends to procure will be optimized under Riggleman more than any other potential candidate. Riggleman has been impressive in certain respects. But getting this job is no slam dunk for anyone.

Absolutely. Rizzo's first offseason is a huge one for the franchise. But, I do trust him to make the right decision.

definitely. I appreciate what Riggleman has done but we need a fresh hire.

kind of sucks that we will probably lose all of the secondary coaches who I kind of like (i.e. Rick Eckstein, Listach). I don't think the players will be happy with that.

It'd be nice to have consistency from season to season so let's hope if they make sweeping changes that they are for good.
