Hanrahan OUT ...

... of closers role ...

Quote
PHILADELPHIA -- On Tuesday, one day after watching the bullpen blow a four-run lead, the Nationals decided that right-hander Joel Hanrahan will no longer be their closer and that Garrett Mock is out as the eighth-inning setup man.

The team will go with a bullpen-by-committee, with right-handers Julian Tavarez and Kip Wells as the late-inning options. Once left-hander Joe Beimel is activated from the disabled list next week, he will most likely be the closer, with Tavarez and Wells becoming the setup men.

In the bottom of the eighth on Monday, the Nats had an 11-7 lead, but Mock and Hanrahan couldn't get the job done.

With Mock on the mound, Shane Victorino hit a sacrifice fly to bring in Pedro Feliz and make it 11-8. After Chase Utley singled in Jimmy Rollins, Hanrahan entered the game and couldn't find the strike zone, walking both Ryan Howard and Jayson Werth on 10 pitches.

Raul Ibanez then came to the plate. Hanrahan felt he had no choice but to throw a fastball, and he paid the price, as Ibanez hit a grand slam. It was Hanrahan's third blown save of the season.

"I hope I don't wear out this word, but, again, it was deflating," manager Manny Acta said. "Our offense just battled all day and scored enough runs. We played so hard for eight innings to score enough runs. You lose the game in one inning, it's just tough for the whole team."

i don't know if you were being saracastic or supportive?

hanrahan hasn't been getting the job done.  he doesn't have what it takes to be a closer.  you can see it not only in his performance but also his face.

No, I meant way to be positive about the shake up, all I hear is "nothing will help, we're doooooomed"  snap out of it!!! Maybe this is just what this team needs!!! Sure couldn't be any worse :)

This will do little if anything, but it needed to be done. Too bad it took them FOUR freakING BLOWN GAMES to figure it out.

yup.  hopefully this sends a message to the guys that this team won't accept suckitude (although as you said it took 4 blown saves for them to make a decision).  again we could be 8-12 at worst.

Yes but you're "positive" because your boy-toy has been moved into a role of importance which will, in turn, bite us in the ass because he sucks.

Well he has sucked less than the guy who had the position before him, so that could be a positive, right??

Good deal....Hanrahan is a bust. I figured that Beimel would be in there sooner or later as closer. Hopefully this will help, but who knows with this team.

Still doesn't fix the problem. Only puts a band-aid on it.

All this team has is band-aids, the first aid kit is locked in the Lerner's vault...

So judging by the thread title, I assume they decided to spare Hanrahan's life?

nice work acta and company.  it only took you five fu*king horrible devastating losses to figure out hanrahan can't get the job done.  i have no idea what made them think mock was a potential setup man.

now how long will it take manny and st claire to figure out cabrera is a lost cause and olsen's arm is shot?  probably at least another 15 - 20 combined losses.
