Going with a six man rotation is a nice way to cut down on innings.

For what it is worth, when the Nats had a couple of opportunities to give an extra days rest to their rotation last home stand, they did not.  They could have slotted in Detwiler the day after he was supposed to pitch in the minors and pushed back Zimmermann, Lannan and Martis a day but did not.  I think they could have slotted in Stammen and pushed D-Crab from Thursday to Friday, IIRC, but did not.  It seems they are trying to get the kids used to pitching every 5th day, so they may not want to spoil them with regular extra rest.

In terms of numbers, the 25th player can be a 13th pitcher (either 8 man bullpen or 6 man rotation), a 3d catcher, a 3d back up infielder, or a 6th outfielder.  Figure the ordinary numbers are 5 OFs, 6 IFs, 2 catchers, 12 pitchers.  If you have an IF/OF like Willie, you can go beyond the normal split.

Another disappointing start for McGeary. 4.2 IP 6 H 4 R 4 ER 2 BB 6 K.

He is now 0-4 with a 6.53 ERA for the Hagerstown Suns.

At least the K/BB ratio is pretty good.

On the season McGeary has 35 K in 40 IP which is good but he also has 29 BBs which is way too many. That has killed him.

I wonder how long they will let him get bombed like this before they send him down to Extended ST to try to fix what is wrong with him.

I just stumbled across this blog post from J.P. Ramirez:

Quote

J.P. Ramirez's Minor League Diary: May 17, 2009

Outfielder J.P. Ramirez, a New Braunfels Canyon graduate, is starting his first season as a minor leaguer in the Washington Nationals system.

Over the course of the season, Ramirez will provide a monthly look at life in professional baseball with Express-News staff writer Lorne Chan:

I’m still in Florida, working every day at the Nationals’ extended spring training.

It’s the same as regular spring training, and our days pretty much go from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., with a game in the afternoon against another organization’s extended spring training guys.

There are about 70 of us here, and it’s all the guys left after they pick the minor league rosters. We’re all waiting to get the call.

I’ve definitely gotten a lot better in the outfield and have fine-tuned a lot of things in my hitting. There are fewer guys here now, so you can get a lot more work done in a day.

I was a little disappointed that I didn’t start the season on a minor league team because I had a good spring training, but I’m not worried about it. I’m just going to keep playing.

I can’t think much about getting the call, and it’s hard to gauge. Our general manager, Jim Bowden, resigned in March and he’s pretty much the one who makes all those decisions. He was the one who signed me.

(Acting general manager Mike Rizzo) is here now, so my fate’s up to him.

It’s pretty nice out here in Florida. I live in Melbourne, about 15 minutes away from Cocoa Beach.

I don’t go to the beach though. I’m out in the sun every day already, and I’m not going to exhaust myself.

I’m here to play baseball.

Interesting stuff. Looks like he was hoping to make the Hagerstown roster out of Spring. He'll most likely join Vermont when they begin their season on June 19th.

Norris hit bomb #11 tonight. He needs to be promoted NOW. I understand that Rooney is playing well in Potomac but somehow we have to make room for this guy. He's just wasting his time in Hagerstown at this point.

Rizzo is beginning to piss me off with the lack of promotions. Some guys are just wasting their time at the levels they are playing at. I understand he doesn't want to rush anybody but this isn't the case here.

Meyers pwns again tonight: 6.2 IP 4 H 1 R 1 ER 2 BB 8 K. His ERA is down to 1.72.

Why isn't he in freaking Harrisburg?!!

They could promote the Nats' catchers across the board up to Syracuse.  The two catchers at Syracuse suck right now.  Not sure why they won't do that.

That makes sense to me. Dump at least one of the bums in Cuse and promote Norris, Rooney, and Solano. Keep Montz in AA to split duties with Rooney.

Haha, that appeared in my local newspaper like two weeks ago, but I forgot to post it.

Espinosa is starting to heat back up. His BA is back up to .247 and he is starting to hit the ball very hard again.

2/3 today so far with a HR and a walk.

He now has 10 Doubles and 9 HRs on the season in 162 ABs. Pretty impressive. I did not think he had this much power.

Organizational player moves

Chiefs added RHRP Cory Doyne. Brings Syracuse to 24 players with no official word on the dispositions of Cintron or Cabrera

P-Nats added RHRP Chris Rivera. OF Jesus Valdez on the DL with a hamstring strain

Arms for middle relief

If Collin Balester has another awesome outing tonight it would be hard to keep him down in the Minors. I can Imagine he would  love to have Martis' run support. Martis 6.5 runs per game vs Balester's 1.1 runs per game of support in AAA.  In 2 of Bally's games he has driven in the only runs for the Chiefs... as a switch hitting pitcher. One on a single another on an error. Go Bally! Go Nats!

So Collin's a surfing Carlos Zambrano?

Balester only takes it out on the ball...   not the water cooler.  I thought that was funny when the other players still got water from the cooler after Zambrano did his switch hitting display on it.  LOL

Collin is a great athlete so switch hitting isn't a big deal for him. I personally think his swings and stance looks better from the left side.

Several things about Collin I've always liked were his move to second, ability to handle the bat and his guts. Especially the guts part. Even when he he was leaving the ball up, he was still throwing strikes.

Definitely. Something Crab could've learned to do. Well mainly the throwing strikes part.

Balester has 4 pickoffs of a runner this year already at 2nd base.  What a rally killer. He commits to it. Even if it goes into center field ( Which has happened only once in 2 years) they very rarely get to 3rd base because the centerfielder is backing up the play.
He is a great athlete and I know he is finally having fun this year. He should do well tonight!

Collin Balester through 4 innings at Syracuse    1 hit 2 BB 2 k's 0 runs    2-0 lead  56 pitches.

Balester has given up only 2 runs in his last 20 innings and counting in his last 4 games.  Bally's starting to get in a groove. We Hope!!

We like it when he gets run support!!  The team is rolling too.
That is a nice combination.  Good hitting and Good ppitching  is a lethal combination.

Balester with a 2-out, 2-Run Single off of James Parr to extend the lead to 5.
