wow, spinman calls it.

Balester with a 2-out, 2-Run Single off of James Parr to extend the lead to 5.

The man can hit  Promote him, Rizzo!

He is a switch hitter as a pitcher.  Once Bally makes a play or does something in the game other than just pitching he really gets it rolling.

This kid is Major league ready and that is a luxuary for the nats.
Bally will wait his turn and continue to work hard at AAA.

If Bally can keep to 10-13 pitches an inning he should go 7 innings.

We like it when he gets run support!!  The team is rolling too.
That is a nice combination.  Good hitting and Good ppitching  is a lethal combination.
Hmmm...that's an interesting thought, how does that work?  You're saying, pitch well and score runs?  Are you talking about in the same game?  Are they supposed to take turns?  This is an interesting concept.  Might have to look into it further.

Collin Balester pitches a gem at Syracuse.  7 innings 3 hits, 2 BB, 5 K's, 0 runs and he singles with an RBI... switch hitting left handed.

Can anyone say   " Beem me up Scotty ( Rizzo)"

What a luxury for the Nats to have a Major League ready Starter ready and waiting in AAA.

 Go nats! Go Bally!

Very nice outing by Balester.  He has recovered nicely from his early season struggles and appears ready to go at the ML level.  Also, nice to see they are letting him go near 100 pitches.  I wouldn't mind it if they let him go another inning if he was pitching well.  Condition him to go longer in games!!!! (unfortunately I know they will halt him at 100 pitches no matter what :?)

It is crazy how much they baby the pitchers. Balester gave up a 2-out walk to the #8 hitter in the middle innings tonight with the pitcher on deck and the pitching coach came out to the mound.

Later in the game he gave up a one out single and the pitching coach also came out again.

what a fluke outing by Carlos Martinez in AA tonight: 7 IP 3 H 2 R 1 ER 1 BB 11 K. He's not even a strikeout pitcher, normally.

Yeah it is sad.  Limiting innings for guys that are only a year or two removed from the draft is a good idea.  But, limiting pitch counts to guys that have been pitching for years at the pro level is crazy.  You have to condition players to pitch deeper in games ALL year long.  You can't have a guy pitch 6 innings/100 pitches for ST and half the season in the minors, then call him up and expect him to go past 6 innings/100 pitches.  They have to start conditioning players in extended spring training to go longer, then they need to follow up and allow their pitchers to go until it is obvious they can't go any further.

The coaching staff at the major league level can't do much if they are given a player that hasn't been conditioned.  Its like having a guy run sprints in the minors, then calling him up and expecting to excel at the mile.

McCatty wants to keep his job too.
Look at what he has done for Martis, Balester,  Stammen, Lannan by " babying" them along.  He is a big time pitching Instructor and they all like what he is doing for the guys.

I doubt the pitching coaches get to set the limits.  From what I have read over the years, the minor league coaches receive their instructions for pitch limits from the ML team's FO.  As for the examples you have cited, I don't see them going much further than 6 innings a game, besides that one CG Martis had earlier in the season.  It is a rarity for our pitchers to make it to inning 7.  This isn't a criticism at McCatty, but the organization and baseball philosophy as a whole

The also want to limit innings in the minors so they can use them in the Bigs.  Most guys are on a 170 to 200 inning count for a year. If they have an average of 11 pitches per inning they will let them go past the 7th inning.  Just the facts.

exactly what I take issue with, inning counts (for players that have been pros for 4 or 5 years plus)

A guy who is shooting up my radar in our system is 20 year-old Dominican RHSP Marcos Frias.

7 IP 5 H 3 R 1 ER 2 BB 4 K for him tonight in Hagerstown.

His numbers on the season: 47.2 IP 42 H 21 R 13 ER 1 HR 10 BB 44 K (2.45 ERA, 1.09 WHIP, 8.31 K/9)

He kind of looks older than 20 though. not sure. :?

Watch what they do with Strasburg. He has pitched about 120 or so innings so far this year.
I would be shocked if we let him go past 150 innings this year total!

See earlier post where I state that pitch limits make sense for players less than 2 years removed from the draft.....

Haha.  Seriously, though, I wouldn't mind him pitching a few games in the minors and then having him shut down.  If they did things properly (on him too), then he would condition the majority of the off-season, come in to Spring Training and get stretched out.  Then from there they start letting him go as deep in games as he can, maybe after a few starts if he isn't stretched out.
