The improvements I wanted out of The Show '11 were as follows.

1. In RTTS Catcher mode, give us the option of using the batting camera. I hate not being able to see the plate/strike zone as the catcher... all you see is the catcher's back. Give us the opportunity to use any camera we want.

2. In RTTS Pitcher mode, give us the option of using the batting camera. Once again, give us all the camera choices. I want to see what it's like to face my pitcher from the batter's view.

3. In Manager mode, let there be an option call 'result pitch' as in, the game fast fowards to the pitch that ends the at-bat (walk, hit, strike out, out, hbp, etc. etc.) No more watching every pitch of every game. If you fast foward to result pitches, you'd cut 20-30 minutes off the game, easy.

Linty, they did a lot with RTTS. Check out the Operation Sports forums if you haven't already.

I will.

I used to be a founding father of OS. I have nearly 20 thousand post there... but I hate what that site has become.

I try to avoid it at all cost... but if they have solid 'Show' information, I'll go take a look.

I want The Show on Xbox :(

At least MLB 2k10 was good last year. I loved pitching, but hitting was mediocre. 2k9 was crap.

Hang in there. MVP is coming back for the 2013 season. Just this year, and next for MLB 2K exclusive on XBOX.... then we're back to open baseball gaming on all platforms.

I don't like OS either, but The Show forums are the best location for information. A couple developers hang out there and the guy Knight does the rosters and knows tons. A bunch of people went to community day and are answering questions.

And I'm bored, since some plans fell through. I'm upgrading to OOTP 11.

The one improvement I wanted to see in the new Show has been put in. Analog pitching/batting. Very happy about that.

I remember MVP, it was either 04 or 05 but I remember it being one of the best baseball video games I ever had.

Really?  Sweet.  That's one thing I disliked about it, and liked better about 2k.  Using the analog stick and different gestures for different pitches is better than X....X.....X! to pitch.

What exactly is OOTP?  Everyone talks about it, but what do you actually do with it?

It's a text sim.

You can run a team, run a league, manage a team... pretty much anything you can do in the baseball world, you can do in OOTP.

What exactly is OOTP?  Everyone talks about it, but what do you actually do with it?

It's a game where you're the GM. For example, it's July 2012 and my Milwaukee Brewers lead the division with a rotation of Greinke (yes, I traded for him way before it happened in real life), Gallardo, Rick Porcello, and Brett Cecil. But my other starter, Cliff Lee, is out for the rest of the year, and my offense is going curiously flat - Braun and Fielder are each on pace for 50 homers, but the whole team has collectively been slumping for a month. I'm winning games 3-2 and losing games 2-1, although the team's still like 8 games ahead of the second place guys.

I blew up the team in the 2010 season and did a full rebuild; Braun, Carlos Gomez, and Prince are pretty much the only guys left. Alcides Escobar is a backup because he's got an OBP of like .250.

It's a fascinating game. It's about as nerdy as being Mike Rizzo but as addictive as crack. Right now I'm seriously spending real-life time considering how I can adjust my lineup and what pieces I can trade away that would make me better in October. For instance, Deck McGuire is killing in AAA, but scouts think he's only a three-star pitcher; do I trust him with my fifth spot for the rest of the year? And who do I trade for to take over at SS? Alcides Escobar is such a bad hitter I'm starting Nick Punto instead. Really.

Oh, and in my game the 2012 Nationals are first in the East. Might be because I traded Scherzer to them for Derek Norris. Their rotation - starring Zimmermann, Scherzer, De La Rosa - is all sub-3.00 ERAs. (Strasburg's hurt.) The DC closer is some dude named Edward Mujica who's an All-Star.

Hmm, they also have ITP, a baseball RPG!  [Mazano Tech Shoes] +1 Defense

Do tehy have a demo, I'm trying to look through the site but it's slow because it is blocked by my work filter and my tunnel is acting up today.

You can download OOTP 8 or 9 for free - it's like three years behind, or whatever, but most - though not by any means all - of the features are the same or similar. There've been a lot of fixes but you get the general gist of how the game plays.

Nathan, I play in an online fictional OOTP league.

Here's our home page... as you can see, it's very detailed.

Looks like I can get 8 for free.  I might have to give it a try.  Will there be a 12 coming out soon?

I'm a nerd, so ITP looks cool to me too.

They usually come out in the first month of the season, with Opening Day Rosters and full minor league player ratings based on the BA, BP and other scouting reports for the year. So 12 should be due at the start of April, and also, if you wait for 12 you might get a better Drew Storen - in 11, he's a really mediocre pitcher. (OTOH, Rick Porcello is giving me a 2.05 ERA...)

Worth remembering: no matter what OOTP you get you can play basically every season ever plus fictional leagues. I haven't been able to do a fictional league for an extended time, though, because it's so weird having to learn everybody's names and who's good and who's not, where with the real MLB you kind of already know who you're looking for.

I might fool around with 8 then and if I like it, wait for 12 so I have the newest version.

In OOTP, is there a way to edit a player's ratings while in season?

Become commissioner and you can edit everyone.

Change to Commissioner mode in game options. Open the player's profile, click the last tab, Player Editor. If you cannot see it, you are not in Commissioner mode.

Don't hold your breath, it has been 8 for a couple years now that is free. FWIW, the new version doesn't crash like that.

So for minor league contracts you don't set any terms/salary? It gives me no options when I switch the contract offer to a minor league deal.

That's correct.

They only switch over to salary when placed on the 40 man.

That is expected behavior. A quick summary of OOTP minor league contracts. The link is worth reading because it links to related concepts.

Quote
Minor League Contracts

There are just two types of player contracts in OOTP: major league and minor league. Minor league contracts have no set duration. A player with a minor league contract remains under the team's control until one of the following events occurs:

  • The player attains minor league free agency
  • The player is added to a team's secondary roster. When this happens, the player's contract immediately changes to a one-year major league contract for the league minimum salary.
  • The player is traded, retires, or is given a major league contract extension.

Note: In OOTP, minor league contracts do not cost the team any money. They are effectively $0 contracts.
