What exactly is OOTP? Everyone talks about it, but what do you actually do with it?
It's a game where you're the GM. For example, it's July 2012 and my Milwaukee Brewers lead the division with a rotation of Greinke (yes, I traded for him way before it happened in real life), Gallardo, Rick Porcello, and Brett Cecil. But my other starter, Cliff Lee, is out for the rest of the year, and my offense is going curiously flat - Braun and Fielder are each on pace for 50 homers, but the whole team has collectively been slumping for a month. I'm winning games 3-2 and losing games 2-1, although the team's still like 8 games ahead of the second place guys.
I blew up the team in the 2010 season and did a full rebuild; Braun, Carlos Gomez, and Prince are pretty much the only guys left. Alcides Escobar is a backup because he's got an OBP of like .250.
It's a fascinating game. It's about as nerdy as being Mike Rizzo but as addictive as crack. Right now I'm seriously spending real-life time considering how I can adjust my lineup and what pieces I can trade away that would make me better in October. For instance, Deck McGuire is killing in AAA, but scouts think he's only a three-star pitcher; do I trust him with my fifth spot for the rest of the year? And who do I trade for to take over at SS? Alcides Escobar is such a bad hitter I'm starting Nick Punto instead. Really.
Oh, and in my game the 2012 Nationals are first in the East. Might be because I traded Scherzer to them for Derek Norris. Their rotation - starring Zimmermann, Scherzer, De La Rosa - is all sub-3.00 ERAs. (Strasburg's hurt.) The DC closer is some dude named Edward Mujica who's an All-Star.
