'09 Player Projections: Jesus Flores
« on: January 08, 2009, 11:37:27 pm »
Career Stats:

Year Ag Tm  Lg  G   AB    R    H   2B 3B  HR  RBI  SB CS  BB  SO   BA   OBP   SLG *OPS+  TB   SH  SF IBB HBP GDP
+--------------+---+----+----+----+---+--+---+----+---+--+---+---+-----+-----+-----+----+----+---+---+---+---+---+
 2007 22 WSN NL  79  180   21   44   9  0   4   25   0  1  14  48  .244  .310  .361   78   65   0   0   0   3   5
 2008 23 WSN NL  90  301   23   77  18  1   8   59   0  1  15  78  .256  .296  .402   81  121   0   4   1   4   7
+--------------+---+----+----+----+---+--+---+----+---+--+---+---+-----+-----+-----+----+----+---+---+---+---+---+
 2 Seasons      169  481   44  121  27  1  12   84   0  2  29 126  .252  .301  .387   80  186   0   4   1   7  12

I'm expecting a .275/.325/.430 year out of Flores with around 17 homers and 80 RBI. That will be a good year as long as everyone else does what they're expected to do.

I'll say .265/.320/.420 with 15 HR's.

We should do a series of these.  I see community projections at blogs for a lot of teams.

Sounds about right to me. Hopefully he can find a way to get on base a little more and to throw out baserunners more efficiently (obviously needs more help from the pitchers with that part).

sounds good to me. people will get familiar with Flores this yr. he's going to thrive being the starter from game 1. unlike last year, when he outlandishly started the season in the minors.

Flores is one of the best up and coming catchers in baseball.

I'm really hoping he gets around 450 ABs this season. That's what I based those stats on.

I'll roll with .260/.320/.420, 10-15 HR's, and about 65-70 RBI's.

Wow, you have little faith that his batting eye will progress.

We all seem to be on roughly the same page for Flores, though.

We should do one for Daniel Cabrera later.  That'll be interesting.

Not that anyone care about fantasy guys, but Ron Shandler has him at .238/.280/.358 wih 9 hrs.  I expect something closer to .260/.300/.415 with 12 hrs if he has the job full time. My worry is that they'll bring in a vetran. Rumor is Sox are only offering Tek 1 year at 2 million, mabye we'll swoop in an make him our offseason disaster?

Was deadly with runners on, which inflated his RBI. Can't hit RHers. Poor skill foundation. At age 24, he has time to refine his approach. Just don't expect it to happen soon.

How about Brad Ausmus who's probably a lot cheaper at this point and defensively better than Varitek?

I'm going for .280/.333/.420 and about 14-17 HRs. I think he gets 70-80 RBIs
He is amazing with RISP. I don't think something like that changes year-to-year.

As with any catcher, I'd be happy with .270/.300/.425 with 15-20 HRs and 75 or so RBI hitting in the 7- or 8-hole.  Offensively, it's nuts to expect anything more than that out of your catcher unless you think your catcher's going to the HoF.

.270 and 15-20 would make him one of the better catchers in the league

If he bats 8th I'd expect more walks with lower power numbers.

That's why I said "I'd be happy with" it.

He is the perfect #8 guy because of his average with RISP. Any guys in scoring position have a chance to score before the pitcher spot comes up.

In an ideal situation... A runner is on 2nd with one out or less. Flores singles and he scores. The pitcher bunts Jesus over to 2nd.

Who is this Nats pitcher who has learned to bunt?

I don't think he gets a chance. Look at last years numbers when he batted 8th, they're insane (limited sample) 8 starts, 8 extra base hits, 7 runs,7 RBIS. I wouldn't want any part of that if I was the opposition.

Unless the bases are loaded, expect whoever the 8th hitter is to get walked 99% of the time on the days that Cabrera's pitching. It could work to our benefit, though, if we put someone w/ more speed down there.

Well if we do snatch Hudson, that wouldn't be a good move.
If they intentionally walk him and let the pitcher bunt them over to 2nd and 3rd.. Hudson could do damage.

That is why it is so important to have a true leadoff guy. They have to pick their poison.
