Springfield Modell's Having Insane Nats Sales
« on: December 22, 2008, 01:19:58 pm »
Modell's Sporting Goods at Springfield Mall in Springfield, VA is currently having some terrific store wide sales, including a lot on Nats Merch. I believe Springfield Mall is closing and Modell's is either moving or shutting down. Whatever the case, I went by there yesterday and picked up two adult, one child Nats replica jerseys for family and friends and a Nats 09' calendar for myself, all for under $70. The jerseys were originally $80. The calendar was half off as well at $7.

They also had Nats Blankets for $10, various office supplies, car ornaments, hoodies, and shirts for great prices. Also a ton of Skins and Caps stuff at discount as well.

If you have time, check it out.

I believe Springfield Mall is closing

Is that just a hunch or have you seen that in print somewhere?

Well if it isn't, it should
That mall is horrible. Half the stores are deserted and the mall looks like it hasn't been remodeled in 30 years.

I found some references, a bit dated, that the mall had been purchased in 2006 and was going to be demolished and rebuilt as some sort of urban streetscape thing.

Nice find, Bionic Elbow.  (kind of onerous, could I simply call you "BE"?)

Well, I wonder if the economy crashing is going to put a damper on that project, just as it's brought a screeching halt to construction around Nats park.

Well I just hope they don't revive the old jingle. Anyone remember it? (It was about 30 years ago. Google doesn't even know about it.)

How long do you think it's going on?

I kind of want to check this out, yet I don't want to go tonight when it's balls cold.

Exactly! And that's about all I remember.

(Anyone remember the "Mall at Columbia" jingle?)

I remember when Springfield Mall was a destination. Making the trip from Dale City to Springfield was like going to some enchanted shopping wonderland.

Those are some pretty crazy prices. Were the jerseys all Brad Wilkerson models?

I really have no idea. I just kind of went there on a whim. Still had a lot of stuff though, lots of product.

They had a lot of Guzman, Johnson, and unnamed jerseys. Had a few Zimmermans. They had both home jerseys and old visitor jerseys.

A friend of mine is looking for a NATS WINTER COAT to replace an Orioles one.  Let me know if you see any in your travels!

You've really been pounding this subject lately.  Did some suburbanite steal your parking space or something?

All the Modell's are slashing prices on Redskins, Wizards, Nats stuff.  Gee, I can't imagine why?

But, the level of inventory varies widely.  I have been to a bunch of them in the last week looking for Caps stuff for Christmas, and most Caps stuff is long gone.  You'll see 15-20 times the amount of merchandise in Redskins for every Caps item.

I finally found what I was looking for in Champs in Tysons Corner, and paid full price (ugh) but they had me.

I've seen some of the Nats lined jackets, particularly the interlocking DC ones, but I couldn't tell you where now.  It's all a blur.

It's easy.  And that book I've been kinda reading or looking at "Big Box Swindle". And that fraidy cat guy from work who thinks he needs to get out of the area even though he lives nowhere near the city. Actually,

thanks for reminding me about that book. I stashed it in my bag the last time I travelled for work and now I have for it for the holidays where the TV is commandeered by the kids. I can't even play the Wii I just bought yesterday. I played for about 30 seconds last night (after finishing a take home final and before satisfying my ravenous appetite) and hit a HR in baseball. It was surprisingly very satisfactory. Almost as much as when I hit one in softball BP.

Kids sized Caps jerseys for 20 bucks at Modells on Benning Road. No adult sizes.  At that price I should have bought a bunch and thrown in the clothing donation bin and created a whole generation of inner city impoverished Caps fans.  But I'm not going out of my way to do the Caps dirty work until they remove the obstruction from from my season ticket seat view

Caps stuff?  Try the Kettler Ice Rink.  Right after Ovechkin won the MVP trophy, I found a T-shirt for $15 with that on it.  Not bad for T-shirt!

Not sure if they have cheaper prices in season or not.  Its worth a shot if you're in the area.

What location is obstructed?  Just curious?

I agree with you wholeheartedly on the generic retailers and restaurants, they are boring as hell.  I lived in Alexandria for 19 years, city living at its best.  Ended up moving out to be closer to work, and because the public schools pretty much blow.

I think we have all the same blah chain restaurants around Verizon Center nowadays...one can still go around the corner for jellied pig snout, but if a bloomin' onion or a Hooters titshot tickles your fancy, it's all right there.

Speaking of titshots, there was an amazing spectacle at Greenfields Brazilian BBQ the other night (I know at least a few people on this board have been there recently)...a large group of people from the radio stations upstairs had a day-long drunk at the bar, and by the time I got there at 6 or 7, were doing tequila "bodyshots"...this entailed drinking a shot of tequila from the navel of a prone person on the bar (mostly girls, though a couple of guys), then licking salt off of their chest/cleavage/nipples, and then taking the lime from their mouth (generally with a lot of co-mastication).  Is this normal office party behaviour?  If so, my office party sucked indeed.  I'm not sure that the restaurant was too pleased by this, though some of the staff seemed to enjoy it.
