I don't think that would do it either. That seems to be about the same that other teams will offer him. And as has been pointed out, if the money is the same, Tex would probably go to a team that is already a perennial contender.

8/160 is what CC got, i believe.

8/160 is a serious offer, but we're gonna have to raise this bid if we want Tex.  we gotta pay the "sucky team" tax. that's an extra year and an extra 20 mill or so.

that probably won't be enough, but who knows if that's really the offer.

We quoted some idiotic/delusional orioles fans from one of their sites, is it possible some of them are scouring our site and quoting some of us and laughing their asses off and calling us idiotic/delusional?

ESPN just said we offered Tex 8/160.

I hadn't heard the news until ESPN just reported the offer.  I yelled "YES!" at the top of my lungs for about two minutes.  Basically, this news opens up two possibilities: the Lerners are serious about spending money, and could raise the payroll to something in the realm of $80-$100.  Or, they're trying to sign Tex as a bandaid, and won't sign anyone else of magnitude (shades of Alfonso Soriano).

That's ugly...I don't want to even think about paying a 41-year old first baseman over 20 mil a year.

If you guys spot some of our guys getting quoted and getting ripped bring it here so we can laugh at ourselves. But I'm sure the orioles fans have undercover moles here that monitor and report what we say about them.

If they are truly willing to spend that much money then at the very least we're getting Dunn.

I have a feeling that we're getting played.

that's freaking deflating.

well, we've already traded for Willingham/Olsen.

Keep in mind the "Nationals Effect" (of marginally good players, such as Kearns, Lopez, etc. sucking ass after coming to DC).  Hopefully, that really did have to do with "motivation", and with better play, the problem will correct itself.

the only team that makes the first public offer and gets their man at the first offered price is the Yankees.

I hope to god I am wrong. if we can get him for 8/160,  i'll try and do cartwheels in my house.

Scott Boras has told reporters he has offers from every team of interest.

Scott Boras addressed a massive pack of reporters here at the Bellagio. Mark Teixeira, the most prominent free agent reamaining, has received contract offers from every team with interest (presumably the Red Sox, Angels, Nationals, Orioles, and Yankees), he said.

http://www.boston.com/sports/baseball/redsox/extras/extra_bases/2008/12/boras_speaks_so.html

and only our offer has been made public.  that worries me, yet excites me at the same time.

it could mean two drastically different things.

Make that Nationals Red in the picture above. Sources within the Nationals Organization tell the Central Maine Sports Blog that the Nationals are "99% certain they will land slugger Mark Teixeira. Teixeira has narrowed the field down to the Red Sox and Nationals, with Teixeira and his family favoring Washington, and Boras pushing for the Red Sox."
In that case, the Red Sox win. :(

id be opposed to trading milledge unless it was really worth it. I can see him becoming a really great reliable hitter, only problem is his cf defense.

He's 28 now, 10 years means he's 38 at the end of his deal. I can live with that.

For some reason, my mind went to 31.  Only 28?  Go for ten years!

And it doesn't necessarily mean that we'd have to hold on to him for all 10 years.
