Nationals make serious offer to Teixeira
The Nationals are showing how serious they are when it comes to bringing Mark Teixeira to Washington.

It has been learned from a Major League source that Washington offered the switch-hitting first baseman an eight-year, $180 million contract. That would be $22.5 million per season.

But the Nationals have competition when it comes to acquiring Teixeira's services. The Angels, Orioles, Red Sox and Yankees are also in the mix.

We won't know that until Teixeira signs the contract.

if we want to speculate about anything here, i think it is telling that Ladson didn't say "are willing to offer", but instead said "have offered".  there's a big difference in the wording there.

that is, speculation regarding rumors is ok.

5:38pm: Jeff Zrebiec of the Baltimore Sun says the Orioles met with Boras last night and apparently made an offer.  However, Peter Schmuck says the nine-year, $180MM report was "met with incredulity from O's officials."

5:33pm: According to MLB.com's Bill Ladson, the Nationals offered Tex an eight-year, $180MM contract.  Dave Sheinin talked to a Nationals exec who said in general about the rumors, "Ninety percent of this stuff is pure fabrication."

Note: The Sheinen report mentioned here was like an hour ago. the Ladson one happened about 5 minutes ago.

Make that Nationals Red in the picture above. Sources within the Nationals Organization tell the Central Maine Sports Blog that the Nationals are "99% certain they will land slugger Mark Teixeira. Teixeira has narrowed the field down to the Red Sox and Nationals, with Teixeira and his family favoring Washington, and Boras pushing for the Red Sox."

The source went on to state that the Nationals had a conference call with the minor league officials today, making sure the minor league system could "take the hit of losing two first round picks" in exchange for Teixeira.

we can't lose either of our first round picks because they are both top 15.  we'd likely lose our 2nd rounder for Tex.

and I'm not quite sure, but if I recall, the losing team (LA) gets two picks. one from the signing team, and one supplemental pick that is created but not taken from the signing team.

ESPN just reported that the Yanks offerred A.J. Burnett. Not sure of the numbers yet.

It looks like the Yanks are going to buy themselves a rotation. Hopefully, it blows up in their faces.
