If that is true, he will sign here.

No way he will pass up 10 years at >200 million

...unless the Red Sox offer close to the same amount, even a little less. Keep in mind that he'd be the face of pretty much any team he chooses. And the Red Sox are WS contenders every season now. I'd choose the Red Sox if I were him, but I'm hoping Tex really does want to play closer to home. I'm not trying to be a downer, but the Red Sox are a consistent winning franchise and we're trying to be one (just like every other bad team). :?

From Ken Davidoff in Newsday:
Quote
The bidding for Teixeira is intensifying, according to a league source, with the Red Sox, Angels and Nationals all in the hunt. One industry official said this morning of Teixeira, "I think he might get his $200 million." While the Angels and Nationals were said to be at eight years and $160 million with Teixeira, and the Red Sox at six years and $120 million, Boston figured to raise its offer shortly.

for some reason the Orioles fans at OH think that the Orioles can bid LESS than us, and still get Tex.

Right because Severna Park is like 15 minutes closer to Balmer

It is a defining characteristic of lousy teams that the fans have to think irrationally to keep up hope. Us, too!

How do we know he doesn't want to be a franchise player? I disagree about the Red Sox.
They have Ortiz, Bay, Drew, Pedroia, Lowell, Papelbon, Beckett, Dice K

If he wants to be a franchise player, what better place? He can win a championship for his "hometown" team.

He would be an idiot if he did. And if he did “That shows us we wouldn’t want him anyway.”

One thing to keep in mind is that all the numbers thrown out are different so who knows what is fact or fiction.

Damn, I can't believe this thread has gone 35 pages now and over 850 posts.

Nationals fans want Mark Texeira and they want him now.  :)

apparently, the Orioles are much closer to winning that the Nats are. if he signs with the Nats, he'll never win and all he cares about is money, but if he signs with the Orioles he will in a few years and he'll sign because cares about playing for his hometown team more than the money.

or somesuch.

(I'm reading the Tex thread at Orioles Hangout).

I said this a while ago: If Mark ends up with the NAts then all he really cares about is cash. Winning doesn't matter.

At least, if he was in Baltimore and losing he could say "well, I am playing for the team I grew up rooting for - living the dream and what not."

Because there is no way he wins any time soon in DC. And for DC to be in this game is just silly to me they have no real quality pitching depth whatsoever and now they will have completely hamstrung a developing organization for years.

They couldn't scrape together the cash to sign their first round pick last draft but they do this?

it makes no sense.

from over there.

That guy is a bona fide idiot and has no idea what team he is actually cheering for.

The Nats don't have any young talent. I think we have a better chance of winning regardless of the division.

again, from over there.

that's funny when 5/9 of our starting lineup(Dukes, Milledge, Zimmerman, Flores, Hernandez) is 25 or younger, and 3/5 of our rotation(Balester, lannan, Olsen) is too.

O's will not finish higher than 4th in the East for foreseeable future. Hell, Toronto is decent too so the O's may be in the cellar for the next 5+ years.

wasnt sure if this was posted:

http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/news?slug=ys-motateixeiranats121008&prov=yhoo&type=lgns

LAS VEGAS – The Washington Nationals have stepped boldly into the Mark Teixeira sweepstakes, making an offer to the free agent first baseman for seven years and $150 million, a highly placed baseball source said Wednesday morning.

With the New York Yankees occupied by signing CC Sabathia to a record $161 million deal, the Nationals quietly became a player in the competition to sign the top free-agent hitter. Although the Boston Red Sox, Los Angeles Angels and Baltimore Orioles are also in hot pursuit of Teixeira, there is reason to believe the 28-year-old slugger would consider the Nationals’ offer.

The quiet, businesslike Teixeira grew up in Severna Park, Md., and attended high school in Baltimore. It is unclear how much stock he puts in playing for a team within driving distance of his hometown – especially when that team is struggling to develop a winning tradition. The Nationals were 59-102 in 2008, finishing 32½ games back and in last place in the National League East.

If Teixeira does prefer the East Coast, it could put the Angels at a disadvantage, even though they have made their top priority re-signing the player who batted .358 in 54 games for them last season and provided lineup protection for Vladimir Guerrero.

It doesn’t appear the Nationals’ offer will be the last, or highest, to Teixeira. His agent, Scott Boras, is seeking a 10-year, $200 million deal. Although it is doubtful any team will go that long or that high, Teixeira probably could get an eight-year contract, and from a team with a strong chance to win immediately.

O's fans have been saying that for over 12 seasons now.

plus there is the whole "Angelos hates the Nats he'd never let Tex sign with them" thing they believe over there.

Actually, I think Angelos hates his own team. That is the only reasonable explanation as to why the O's are in the state they are in.

Some awesome commentator on MLBTR says Teixeira is a great fit with Boston "because he's white." And looking at the Red Sox roster ... wow.

I think by commentator, he meant someone who posted a comment under the article. I read it under the comments section so it actually wasn't someone from MLBTR

Oh OK. Then that isn't so shocking. We have people here who feel that way.
