Productive reliever in AAA. You should care because he probably is the next guy up in our bullpen

Really?

I do wander.

3 pieces? Harp and Murph unless you are including Gio. Werth is already gone. And on your previous post I want a # 3 not only to replace Gio but to replace him in the play-offs.
gio has pitched a lot of innings that were general very good (2012 and 2017) to average during the regular seasons.  That's a big hole going forward.  I'd like to bring in a lefty starter who could fill that role, perhaps with some indication he can handle the playoffs.

According to a post on MLBTR, the Nats are one of a handful of team that are competitive balance tax payers.  That means that if we sign a qualified FA, we must forfeit our 2nd and 5th highest picks in the 2018 draft, and have our international signing pool reduced by $1 million next year.

That likely means we aren't signing a QFA.

QFAs are: Jake Arrieta, Wade Davis, Lance Lynn, Eric Hosmer, Mike Moustakas, Lorenzo Cain, Alex Cobb, Greg Holland, and Carlos Santana

I don't think it's so cut and dry to say the Nats won't sign someone who received a QO. The names that pop out would be Arrieta (Boras connection), Holland (Boras again), and Davis. I don't see the Nats losing picks for Lynn or Cobb, and the position players don't make sense with guys like Rendon, Murphy, Zim, and the depth in the outfield.

Please not Arrieta...

If he gets anywhere near what he's hoping to, somebody will have vastly overpaid.  Arrieta's best days are way past him.  He will never approach that run he had in 2014 through the first half of 2016.

Hosmer is the only one I'd see giving up the picks for.

I thought you would have been a fan of picking up Holland...

Eric Hosmer isnt going to sign anywhere that doesnt put him at 1B. He is not a great defensive 1B, but he just won a Gold Glove(joke). He would be a terrible signing for this Nats team. It makes zero sense for us to sign Hosmer

Not with Doolittle and Madson. Also not with Holland likely seeking a multi year deal.

Eric Hosmer, Mike Moustakas, Lorenzo Cain, Jake Arrieta, Wade Davis, Lance Lynn, Alex Cobb, Greg Holland and Carlos Santana are the players. Seems pretty obvious as to why they did.

thing is, the Nats get whacked picks if they sign any player that rejected a qualifying offer.

Five potential free agents for the Nats:

https://districtondeck.com/2017/11/13/washington-nationals-5-free-agents-consider/

1. Arrieta - uh no
2. Alex Cobb - potentially solid #3-4, but not worth a draft pick and $17 million
3. Pat Neshek - YES
4. Alex Avila - intriguing, would delay Severino a bit more though
5. Wellington Castillo - see above

If Neshek wants a one year deal, fine.

Avila is coming off a career year. Before that, he and Wieters were about the same at the plate

Avila doesn’t excite me and Castillo isn’t worth the draft pick penalties. I’d let Weiters, Sevi and Read fight for it (bonus points if it’s Celebrity Death Match style) and if none of them emerges as a winner, see who you can shake loose at the trade deadline.

It would be cool if the Nationals signed both Pat Neshek and Steve Cishek.
