As a side note, I give Dukes 2 games, and he will be put back on the DL list.....just a hunch....

I give him 10 days.

Wily Mo Pena has *never* hit 30 HRs.

not even in the Minors.

he had 30-40 HR *potential*, but it never really manifested.

his profesisonal career high is 26. he did it twice. once in Single-A, and once in the majors.

You said it yourself, he hit 26 HR in 300 ABs.  That is good enough for me to consider it 30.  Even though technically you are correct.  He might not have hit 52 HRs, but I'm pretty sure he would have gotten 4 more over 300 more ABs (even though he didnt this year)

Given his success last year and possible injury this year, I'll give him a fairly short leash next year.  If it is him or Kearns, I'll take WMP, just because he has a higher ceiling and has had less of an opportunity throughout his career to develop.

ok, I'm gonna have to call bull**** on this.  he says he's been hurt for his entire career with this same shoulder problem....but he never did anything about it until this year?  so he's claiming that he's had a shoulder injury for SIX YEARS RUNNING, and only now is he doing something about it?

Ok, it wasn't 6 years ( not entire MLB career)it was 3 1/2 years as I went back and read the article. It was something he lived with until he had to do something. Have you ever put off a medical procedure? I have and I live with it. At some point I will do something about it because the discomfort will become too much. Actually , I have two procedures but until it affects my performance in my daily life I will put it on hold because the surgery is riskier in one and the rehab is lengthy in the other..

Ugh ... I have ... I put off elbow surgery for three full years until I couldn't stand it anymore and I don't play sports for a living -- if having an injury would jeopardize my career -- I could see where I would try to put off surgery as long as I could.

I still think the team should try to acquire a LF with the two mentioned above as bench players. In the same vein we should trade DY and have NJ back up or platoon  until he can last a season ( without going on the DL with a season ending injury)with us acquiring a 1st baseman.I know Tomterp didn't think that NJ would accept a role as a back up but what could you reasonably get for him in a trade?

My point with Nick is that, when healthy, he's one of the top 6 or so 1st basemen in the game.  So if he's healthy, you play him.  His injuries haven't come from overuse, they've come from flukes that will happen when they happen.  Unless we sign Teixeira, we won't have anybody better than Nick to put out at first, assuming the tendon sheeth isn't a lingering issue.  Ride him till he breaks and then Dmitri or whoever else steps in.

I think Nady was as high as the Nats were going to reach this year -- can't see them making a play for Tex -- and I don't see why he would come here -- we're not contenders -- in the absence of a Nady type player coming here -- seems pretty clear they'll go with NJ and Dmitri - they are both still under contract afterall ...

no offense tom, but when "flukes" continue to happen every single year like clockwork, and when the player *always* takes far longer than expected to recover from these repeated "flukes"...

there has to be a point where they are no longer considered "flukes".

I'm ready to move on and start looking elsewhere for 1B solutions.  i mean, has there been a single season that Nick Johnson hasn't missed significant time due to an injury?

Nick Johnson is a great first baseman, when healthy as you say. But weve given him this long and he cant stay healthy, its just injury after injury missing a hefty amount. I would love to upgrade our last outfield spot and convert someone into a firstbaseman when/if NJ gets injured again. If he doesnt and we still upgraded our OF, we could have a much better lineup (Depending who we get obviously)

can't wait to see Zimmerman, Dukes, Milledge, Flores, and hopefully Bonifacio (our future), all producing on the field cohesively.

Dukes had 11 AB in Columbus with one hit (HR) 5 K's and 3 Walks plus a HBP ( our very own Brian Lawrence)

I'd like to know what our record is with Kearns out of the lineup?

i don't know, but it's CRYSTAL CLEAR this team is better w/o big ears. the lineup looks so much better without him stinking it up. it's befuddling that he was batting clean-up.

i am completely content with Harris/Milledge/Dukes as our opening day outfield in 09. not to mention that's the most gangsta outfield ever assembled.
