MLB & Division Watching (2011)
« Topic Start: January 16, 2011, 02:37:38 PM »
Prolly about time to start these up for '11.  Maybe Chief can merge to make it astrologically correct.

I'll start this here, though with the Reds and Votto agreeing to a 3/$38 extension.

NL Central should be fun to watch this year.

Chris Young signs with New York Mets

Associated Press
NEW YORK — A person familiar with the negotiations says right-hander Chris Young has agreed to a contract with the New York Mets, pending a physical.

The New York Mets; where every pitcher not named R.A. Dickey goes to die.

poor Mutts, Reyes and Wright are at their peaks/starting to decline, Johan is on the downside, beltran is done and they look like they are rebuilding. That is what happens when a team doesn't know if it wants to compete or rebuild

How many years of team control does he have left?

Holy crap. The Jays sent Vernon Wells to the Angels for Napoli. Did not see that coming.

Wonder if Wells DH/corner OF there.  His defense in CF is basically done and last year was a nice offensive rebound for him.

I'm guessing they move him to left and have Abreu DH.

If Jeff Mathis is the Angels starting catcher ahead of Hank Conger next season, Scioscia is an idiot. Mathis is worse offensively than WIL FREAKING NIEVES.

Worth mentioning: After June 22 last year, Jeff Mathis hit .163/.186/.231. 48/4 K/BB.

Wow. That makes Wil Nieves look like a Hall of Famer.

Doubtful. They've already got top prospect Hank Conger up with the big team. I'm not that knowledgeable about the Angels, but I would think it's safe to think that they'll platoon Conger with Mathis, with Conger eventually taking over full time. Also, Rosenthal is reporting that Juan Rivera might be heading to Toronto as well, which would open up a spot in the outfield for prospect Mark Trumbo, who batted .301 with a whopping 36 homers in AAA last season.

And they've got the only OF prospect rated higher than Harper in Mike Trout who could very well get a look in 2012.  Interesting move for them.  Now where does Toronto slot Napoli in?  Split C/DH depending on who they're giving a day off?

Depends. Now that they have a spot open in the outfield, they could shift Davis to center and move Bautista back to right, opening up third for EE, which would in turn open up a spot at DH for Rivera/Napoli. Still, one way or another, J.P. Arrencibia won't get enough playing time.

this seems like a fair trade.

Edit: They got Juan Rivera too. I'm thinking maybe the Jays win.

We should try and acquire Peter Bourjos from them... now that Wells is taking over CF.

Had a UZR of 16 last year in CF... UZR/150 of 44.7

Didn't hit worth a lick in the pros... but for the type of skill set he has, he was plenty good enough as a hitter in the minors.

.295 hitter in A
.281 hitter in AA
.314 hitter in AAA

Speedster with some pop... he'd pretty much be the best defender in all of baseball from the get go... only 23, plenty of time to grow into a player.

If they get 2009 Rivera then it's a win.  If they get the 07, 08 or 10 model then it's even.

I like that idea. The Bill James and ZiPS projection systems think he'll put up something like .250/.300/.350 which is fine by me from center field. It's the same offense as Nyjer, but from a 24-year-old with ace defensive skills and speed, and potential for a dozen homers. Here's a Bourjos home run swing: http://mlb.mlb.com/video/play.jsp?content_id=12623553

Wells isn't taking over CF for them.  Wells, like Hunter who they moved to RF, can't play CF anymore.  If anything it's a move to let Abreu DH and Wells play LF.

Their future OF likely involves Bourjous, Trout and Trumbo getting a crack at working together.
