I watch because I love baseball, always have.  I used to stop by and watch the JMU games on my way home from classes, even when they were not that good.  It's a beautiful game, at any level.

And yes, we suck, but it wont stop me from watching them.  One of my friends was a scrawny little thing in ninth grade (so was I) and some kids started picking on him.  Four of them started beating the crap out of him, I was watching from a distance.  I ran in and got a big time punch on one kid before they kicked the bejesus out of us.  I could have just walked away and saved myself a couple scars, but I didn't because that was MY friend.  This is how it is with MY team;  I could just walk away and forget about them, but I suppose I am here no matter what.  The good and the bad.  And Ill take my scars in the process...

I feel the same -- I have no problem with people who don't choose to spend their money on a losing team -- times are tough and there's only so much to go around -- but if you only care about or watch a team when they're winning ... then you're not a fan, you're a front runner -- which is fine -- to each his own -- my problem is with the people whose teams stunk for a while, and they didn't care at all, but when they got good -- they jumped on the bandwagon and claimed they were fans all along -- yeah -- I'm looking at you Sawx Fans ...

LOL ... God bless the front runners ...
Obviously you haven't read my blog or seen my postings for the past 3 years.   I'm ANYTHING but a frontrunner dear.  But I'm also not a complete idiot and send praises to ownership that doesn't seem to give a rats ass...

I don't subscribe to the "you're not a true Nationals fan unless you love the team regardless of how much they suck" mantra.

Nobody is saying anything of the kind -- you're entitled to only watch them when they're good -- that's your prerogative -- but insinuating that I'm a sucker because I choose to spend money to watch the team that I love is garbage

and insinuating that I'm (or anyone else for that matter) is not a fan because they choose to not watch this poor excuse for a major league baseball team is just as much "garbage" IMO.  So don't feel surprised if someone gets a little hot under the collar when you makes such accusations.

Great story and I commend you for taking the ass whopping along with your friend. However, I don't think this is quite the same.   I've taken ass whopping for people in the past but I'm not taking one for these bums that call themselves the Nationals. I'll still watch all the games though.  :?

I don't think I would take one for them either, but I was trying to capture my sentiments in a personal experience.  With that said, just like with my friend, there is a such thing as tough love.  Just because I love the team doesn't exclude me from trashing them or being angered at the crappy play that field night after night.  I think if anything, diehard fans (of all shapes and forms) are more entitled to trash the team than anyone.

Ah ... tough love -- ironically, the opposite of love isn't hate-- it's apathy -- if you're pissed that your team is stinking up the joint -- then -- you're a fan -- if you just can't be bothered until they're winning -- that's something else entirely -- trust me -- I've hurled plenty of inanimate objects and spewed many a frothy rant since April ... such is the life of a sports fan -- unless you rooted only for Edwin Moses -- you're going to experience way more lows - than you do highs ... I guess we're all masochists in face paint ...

I extend much tough love towards the Nats.

You don't have to watch ever game to care about the team, especially when it's a meaningless late season game against another garbage team in a garbage season.

Thank You Chief.

Pardon my French, but I refuse to smile while somebody is screwing me in the rear...which is exactly what's going on with Ringling Bros. at 1500 South Capitol Street.     I demand that they do something...I don't just sit in the stands with a pennant and say "Yeahh!  I'm a Nats Fan...even though we SUCK!  Yeah go SUCKY Nats!"   :?

That doesn't make you a "real" fan, that just makes you complacent to an unacceptable situation.

Yeah...I hope there's no French in here...since Montreal is a French-speaking city, do you think Expos fans would take that the wrong way?  Damn.  OOPS.   :-[   If so, I apologize!

Lighten up Francis -- I know you're a fan Sens -- of course everyone here is a fan -- clearly when you only care about a team good or bad when they're winning you're a front runner -- that's obviously not what we are here -- However, we get to be a fan in our own way -- I choose to watch and go to games -- you choose not to -- one person's brand of fandom isn't more superior than anyone else's - I'm not immune to what's going on -- this team is hard to watch -- but, I'm not going to stop going or watching -- because even though they suck -- they're still my team and I still love baseball --that doesn't make me complacent - that makes me a fan - so just relax already ...

If what the Nats are playing is considered baseball then I don't love it.
