I watched American League for years.  DH was always for the pitcher.  Although I haven't read the rules, I'm sure you can make a defensive replacement for a position player in the game.  You can have Pinch hitters.  But the Designated Hitter position was designed specifically so the pitcher didn't have to hit!

The pitcher can hit if the team chooses to have him hit at the start of the game but if they do so the DH rule is forfeited. So for the record, the Nats could not have designated someone to hit for Guzman. However, the pitcher can end up hitting later in the game as blue911 stated. The way it goes is that IF at any point during the game the DH is inserted into the field to replace a fielder for defensive purposes () or whatever other reason (injury) then the pitcher has to bat in the position of the replaced position player.

Well they are both hitting above .300 as of now (even though Dmitri's only had two games), so I think we could do something like every 6 games, Boone gets 4 starts and Dmitri gets 2 or something until we hit better.

Dmitri reminds me a whole lot of Tony Gwynn

Or Boone could play in the outfield sometimes so we can have both bats in the lineup.

Boone has never played a game in the outfield (Minors and Major leagues).

Lopez to the OF, Boone to 2B

And he'd do worse than our current crop of linebackers outfielders?

Leftfield has been a disaster. When Wily Mo first was injured, Manny talked about how he was disappointed because they really needed to give WMP a full season to evaluate him.  If he needed a full season in March doesn't he still need a full season? With a swing as long as WMP's he's useless as a pinch hitter. He either has to play every day or cut him.

Playing AB would kill our bench.

I understand the full season to evaluate approach, but I bet Manny didnt think he would get zero to negative production out of him and the rest of the OF.  Maybe if the other two OF spots were producing adequately, we could tolerate WMPs lack of production. But right now, we need to at least get one bat into the OF to keep out head abover water.

Kearns needs to sit. I'd rather the Nats play WMP,Milledge and Dukes. At least by the end of the season we'll know what to expect from these three.

I expect Willie Mo to start hitting eventually.   The real question is, does anyone expect him to ever play leftfield at major league caliber.

He's been brutal so far. But he may be able to play at the Manny Ramirez level.

High fiving the opponent's fans after making a great catch, then throwing the ball back for a double play or leaving the field after two outs?

Manny is a lot better now than what he was at Cleveland.

His hitting seems to be directly proportional to his defense. He hit last year for us and didnt play terribly in the OF.

Boone at first base, young to the bench.  While were at it, release Lo Duca and Estrada.

The Sox can afford a clown. The Nats can't.

I have to agree. Young's defense is gonna kill us. Boone has been one of our most consistant hitters as of late and he's not a liability in the field.

Last year, Dmitri's defense improved throughout the year, to where it was bearable. His offense was excellent.  Although Boone would be better right now in the lineup, I think they are going to give Dmitri a lot of reps to get him ramped back up, and that makes our team stronger.

So I was under the impression that Young's incredible mentorship, his positive leadership, his electrifying smile, and his supremely powerful bat would more than compensate for his all his quirks, but here he is currently sitting on a .215 avg which continues to sink like a stone.

Remind me why we signed this guy again? Help me keep the faith.

Still too early. He's had some good AB's. I'm not too worried about him..yet.
