does anyone still think he's not at least a legit number 2 (number 1 on a team like ours). With a decent defense, he's definately a damn good pitcher

I'm not touching that with a 10 foot pole. I am done talking about Dunn. Everyone knows my opinion about him and I know everyone else's opinion and no one is going to change their mind so it is useless to argue about it over and over.

Does that mean you'll stop repeating your well-known opinion in every game thread? :?

As for Lannan, I don't believe I was ever in the "#4 at best" crowd, so maybe you should take that one up with your buddy spidernat ;)

I wonder what Lannan really does think of this franchise. He is not the type of person to speak out against his team, but do you think he wants out? It must be frustrating not getting wins when he pitches so well. He would be close to the top in Ws if he played for the Yankees or Dodgers.

He likes it here. Thinks we have talent here and he wants to be around when we are a winner.

I would like us to give him an extension in the off-season.

QFT.

He is one of a few players I would be pissed if we trade or don't keep him for years to come.  A rotation with Stras, JZ, and Lannan would be killer, and add in 2 of the other promising starters like Stammen and Detwiler, we could be good very soon.

Subtract Lannan's first two shaky starts, and he has a 2.78 ERA if I calculate correctly.

126.5 IP, 39 ER

I would guess that he feels gratitude. He was the 324th pick in the 2005 draft and in two years he was pitching in the majors.Sure the team sucks but on a good team he's probably still stuck pitching in AAA.

I think that has to be one of the best in baseball. John Lannan is on pace to throw 223 innings this season.

Mmmm...I don't know, he's been pretty economical with his pitches this year.  It might be good to stretch him out a bit.  We can't shut everyone down.  It should be more about pitches thrown than innings pitched.

What's interesting about that is the 223 is 42 more innings than last year, but his starts this year average 96 pitches/start while it was 95 last year. So essentially, he is going to throw the same number of pitches, but is more efficient, hence the innings increase. Though, he had only 31 starts last year and is on pace for 34-35 this year. The difference in efficiency to me might be attributed to the fact that he doesn't even try to strike out guys anymore.

For the record, SF misstated my position. First he suggested that I said he was a fringe 5th starter and when I called him on the lie he changed it to me saying he was at best a number 4. I have said that I think he is a number 4 but could be a number 3 at best. He's been fairly consistent and if if he were to show me another season of being solid I would be willing to concede that he is a number 3 but no higher than that.

I definitely did not appreciate sitting through an hour and a half rain delay to see Mr. Lannan crap the bed.  1.2 IP- 7 ER.  WTF?  That was horrendous.

On the good side, the team fought back to tie it up, which was fun.

John Lannan's made the Fangraphs "Stock Down" list.  But I cite Fangraphs too much.
http://www.fangraphs.com/fantasy/index.php/stock-watch-823

xFIP is fielding independent pitching, which focuses on home runs, Ks, and BBs, applies average fielding to balls in play for conversion to outs (GB, FB, Liners, pops, etc...), and normalizes the home run per fly ball to average for the league rather than using the player's.  I believe there are also ballpark adjustments.  Let's just say it tries to isolate the pitchers performance from his fielders and the park.

Quote
John Lannan, Nationals

Lannan’s ERA in 2008 (3.91) was considerably lower than his XFIP (4.47), and he has outdone his XFIP again this season (4.03 ERA, 4.74 XFIP). However, the gap is closing, with the lefty getting drubbed for 19 runs in 18 August frames. He has issued 11 walks, while punching out nine batters.

The 24 year-old boasts above-average control (2.97 BB/9 in 2009) and groundball tendencies (51.3 GB%). However, his strikeout rate has dipped from slightly below average in 2008 (5.79 K/9) to an untenable 3.75 per nine frames. Compared to last season, hitters are chasing fewer of his pitches (26.1% in ‘08, 21.3% in ‘09; 25% MLB avg.) and are making more contact (83.1 contact% in ‘08, 89% in ‘09; 80.6% MLB avg). He’s certainly a serviceable back-rotation hurler, but Lannan is more of a 4.50 ERA+ guy than the high-3, low 4 ERA pitcher that we have seen so far.

Although he should try to strike guys out; aren't some pitchers just better at getting guys to ground out or Pop up than throwing strikes.  I recall one game that I went to that's exactly what happened.

Yes.  It's just it's rare and tough to do.  I think if you go through Lannan's most successful starts, you'll see groundball out rate of 60%+.  What the author is saying is that Lannan may be showing signs of not being that rare case, after a pretty impressive 1.5 season run.  More thanthe Ks, I'd be concerned about not gettting hitters to chase out of strike zone pitches, because those tend to have weaker contact than strikes.  Also, the comment is not saying he's pitching himself out of baseball.  It's just saying he seems to be reverting to non-elite status.
