Chad Johnson to Redskins?

The Washington Redskins may be looking to help their rookie coach Jim Zorn, as they are interested in pursuing a trade for disgruntled Cincinnati Bengals receiver Chad Johnson, according to the Washington Post.

The report said that Redskins owner Daniel Snyder was eager to add a top-notch receiver to his roster, and had Johnson at the top of his list. It also said that Johnson, according to two league sources, was "eager to land a hefty new contract from Washington."

The Bengals have said they do not want to trade Johnson, but the receiver's agent, Drew Rosenhaus, is said to be working behind the scenes to facilitate a trade, the Post reported.

Johnson is a talented reciever who has caught no fewer than 87 passes over each of the last five seasons. But he has also clashed with coaches and rubbed some people the wrong way with his gamesmanship.

"He made it very clear that (Johnson) was his top choice," one coaching candidate told the Post.

The Post, citing the insight of two unnamed NFL general managers, speculated that it would likely take a low first-round pick and a third-round pick, or perhaps two second-round picks, to acquire Johnson.

who needs draft picks anyway?

not only do you have to trade for the talent of chad johnson, you have to add in something even more to entice the bengals to take the cap hit.  the cap hit has to drive the price up

you would think this guy would learn from past experiences. brandon lloyd?

how much money can you tie up in receivers? moss and randle el arent cheap.  i guess you can just keep restrucuring contracts indefinitely

Look. He really wants to be a Redskin.

Remember after they got Portis, at the press conference Portis said all his friends were calling him asking how they could get that money

They would have to take a hit on Brandon Lloyd if they want to cut him. They should try to see if he Zorn can make it work with him.

I'd have to say that Chad Johnson is a little better than Brandon Lloyd ever was. I say it's worth the picks ONLY if we help the D-Line as well this offseason.

how are you going to help your D-line? with draft picks you dont have? with salary cap space you dont have because it is tied up in one of the more unnecessary positions on the field?

chad johnson is a good player, but i think the redskins have more pressing needs, which getting johnson would preclude them from filling

The Redskins are reportedly $20 million over the salary cap.  Chad Johnson is now 30 and was being thrown to by Carson Palmer.  Snyder, once again, looks at everything as a fantasy football player.  To him, any player's stats are interchangeable with a new team.

  • Jeff George had one of the top passing yards per attempts ratio in the NFL with the Vikings.  He was throwing to Randy Moss, who did not play for the Redskins, after Snyder hired George.
  • Jason Campbell is not Carson Palmer.

  • Brandon Lloyd caught long passes in San Francisco for a team that was always losing and desperate to catch up.  His 18 yards/catch did not replicate themselves in Washington just by joining the team.
  • The Giants won the Super Bowl after building that team through the draft.
  • Chad Johnson may still be available in 2009, but there are too many things to get organized for him to make much difference in 2008.

Absolutely right.  Another thing: with the Bengals, Chad Johnson has two good, solid recievers to prevent him from getting double- and triple-teamed.

The Redskins would have two as well (or maybe even 3 if you count Randel El), so it'd be the same here, minus the proven quarterback.

I don't think you got my point. That article says 2 second-round picks or a first and third, right? Then, if we could get a good DE in the first or second round, that'd satisfy the need. Our offense, outside of the need for a bigger WR, is just fine. Our starting O-Line is still one of the best, when healthy.

I disagree with this. I think LG needs to be addressed.

BTW, last I checked the Redskins don't have 2 second round draft picks to offer.

I don't agree that Santana Moss and Antwaan Randle El are nearly as good as T.J. Houshmandzadeh and Chris Henry.

True but they're only slightly below them. The systems they play in also play a part in that though.

I'd put Moss up there w/ both of those two. He's short, but he has the skills. I'm a big Moss fan. :D

I don't mind Pete Kendall. He did pretty well for coming in on short notice and not knowing the offense at all.
