Why is Joel Hanrahan on this team?
« on: August 26, 2007, 03:51:23 pm »
This guy is absolutely horrible.  Who walks 4 batters in one inning, including the pitcher??  He's got good stuff but as long as he isn't willing to throw it for strikes he will never be a Major League Pitcher.  We are now seeing why he is a career minor leaguer.

I hope he never pitches again for us.   btw, Joel walked the pitcher twice today.

How about these great numbers: 29 IP 36 H 19 ER 5 HR 20 BB 23 K (5.90 ERA)

In his 5 starts so far he has given up 3, 1, 1, 2, and 3 runs. You are being ridiculous.

He's had one bad start out of 6 and he's a rookie.

Here are my questions...

Do you ever know what you're talking about?
Why do you start yet another knee jerk thread trashing one of the players?
Why do we have to put up with your ridiculous garbage?

I figured if I logged on now I'd find a thread like this, and here it is. Just saying...

He's not being ridiculous.  Hanrahan has been really lucky.  He surrenders a lot of baserunners, doesn't throw many strikes, and is extremely inefficient with his pitch count.  He reminds me a lot of Tony Armas. :-[

He's 25 years old, hardly a young pitcher.  He's a career minor leaguer.
Again here are his fantastic numbers: 29 IP 36 H 19 ER 5 HR 20 BB 23 K (5.90 ERA, 1.93 WHIP)

Give me a break, 3, 1, 1, 2 and 3 are all quality performances, 5 outings of 3 runs or less is not luck - 1 bad outing and your trashing him. These threads are ridiculous.

Unlike other pitchers on this team, this is a fluke performance by Hanrahan.

Still a young pitcher, actually. Even by MLB standards.

Let's look at Joel's numbers over his career:

Majors: 29 IP 36 H 19 ER 5 HR 20 BB 23 K (5.90 ERA, 1.93 WHIP) Terrible
Minors: 983.1 IP 938 H 530 R 457 ER 102 HR 464 BB 858 SO (4.18 ERA, 1.43) Mediocre

This was not a fluke performance from Joel, he has a history of walking batters.  That is exactly why he never panned out with the Dodgers who drafted him in the 2nd round of the 2000 draft.

I recall sportsfan demanding that JB call up Hanrahan because he was convinced Hanrahan would contribute to the rotation. Let's face it, sportsfan is like a fart, he blows with the current wind and usually stinks up the place.

Hanrahan was awful today and should have been pulled after he walked the pitcher for SECOND time. But coming into this game his ERA was 3.42. And he is not alone with having pitching problems in Colorado. Hanrahan has talent, but because he relied so much on his power, he doesn't trust his stuff enough and overthrows. His biggest problem is what is between his ears. He's a rookie, and he will have days like this as all pitchers do. The key is how he deals with it.

Nope.  I said that Lannan would contribute right away and he did. get the facts straight

you actually wanted both Lanna and Hanrahan called up. You also said this about Cordero:

Although Chief was bad at the beginning of the season he has settled down nicely.  If we do trade Cordero we would have to get a bunch in return.  I still wouldn't mind keeping Chief and Rauch around though, they both are fairly young and are both fairly reliable.

And then called for his immediate release a couple of weeks later. Like I said, most of the time when you speak it's like breaking wind.

I never said Hanrahan would be successful up here though.  I knew Lannan would do well and I said so well before he got the callup.  Cordero shouldn't be the closer anymore and I blame Manny for not pulling the plug on him.

I wonder whether Sportsfan's avatar caption will change when Hill has his inevitable bad outing.

You don't have to worry about that because Shawn Hill doesn't have bad outings.  He is far and away the best pitcher on this team.

I knew Hanrahan didn't have a great chance in that 12-1 game where he pitched barely 5 innings. He has control issues.

Sportsfan was gagging to have Hanrahan called up only a month ago, now he is asking why Hanrahan is on the team?

Figures.

Sounds bandwagonish to me.

I wanted Lannan to get the call, not Joel.  That's beside the point anyways.  The point is that Joel Hanrahan did ok in Columbus and earned a shot to pitch up here.  Now that he has pitched here for a few months, he has shown us and the front office what he is capable of.  We now know that he has good stuff but he cannot be a successful Major League starter until he learns to stop walking batters.
