DC United
« on: August 09, 2007, 11:12:05 pm »
...completely filled RFK tonight.  Nats haven't done that since opening day 2005.  Yes, the presence of a certain englishman had much to do with that, but I have to say that the atmosphere was positively electric tonight.  Anyone else there?

Oh no, soccer/football is one of the best sports in the world! I was a keeper back in the day (not a very good one though). We had season tickets for years to the NY Cosmos of the NASL. My brother-in-law's brother played for them as keeper (Shep Messing) and I was lucky enough to be able to meet some of the gods of soccer then....Pele, Franz Beckenbauer, Giorgio Chinaglia, Carlos Alberto, etc. Such a beautiful game!

You should check out "Once in a Lifetime: The Story of the NY Cosmos".  It is a documentary that came out last year.  My parents went on one of their first dates there, and my dad (not a huge sports fan and definitely not sentimental) saved the ticket stub I guess through a combination of the date and the huge deal the Cosmos were at the time.

Shep Messing said something that he was the luckiest guy ever, that there were hundreds of guys in the US who were just as good goalies as he was, but he was just in the right place at the right time, playing in the floundering league in some dump in NY making no money, and then along came Pele and the others and he just went along for the ride

I went to quite a few Cosmos and Dips games...I recall one where Pele and Cruyff played, but I have no idea what year that was.  Will check said docu out.

The new league is a bit of a different animal, though the Beckham circus does threaten to change that, for better or for worse.

Lots of other international superstars are in the rumour mill for the MLS this year...and a few have already come here, including a couple of huge Mexican players  (Juan Pablo Angel just came from the English Premier League and Cuahtemoc Blanco just left Club America to come play in the U.S.)...which I'm sure will inspire the usual litany of hateful, racist, vile crap from the resident crab, but so it goes.

I just attended my 90th Nats game during the Cards series.  I simply cannot make every game (I work out in deep space nine, aka Rockville), but I attend just about every weekend baseball game I can...you?  Between Nats, DC United, and the Caps, I reckon I spend over 100 days a year at DC pro sports events.  Not in the same league as Old Chelsea, but I feed a tonne of my time (and money) to the local sports scene.

my hat is off to you on your fandom. However, lay off the ALL AMERICAN CITY OF ROCKVILLE. There is no place in the world that I would rather live than Rockville, city proper, mind you. The city service and personnel, at least on the phone, are OUTSTANDING. If you want to badmouth a city, pick on DC , one of the worse governments in the whole world.

I don't know. My wife's sister married Shep's younger brother. I don't think that confers brother-in-law status on Shep, but I'm no expert in this. I still have no idea what the difference is between a 2nd and 3rd cousin, and what once removed and twice removed means!

Can't complain about Rockville, other than being a big suburban sprawl where I happen to have an office...glad to hear they are good about picking up the trash and such.  Some good restaurants out there...Benjarong (Thai) in some strip mall out Rockville Pike is a standout, also India Grill (if you make sure that you specify that you like your vindaloo EXTRA spicy).

i THINK India Grill is in the same strip joint where IHop and Mariachi rests. are. Next to Mariachi there is a new one called LA LIMENA , PERUVIAN WITH a few Cuban dishes in the menu. Reviewed last week in THE MAGAZINE of the Compost. For a Peruvian restaurant, great Cuban Sandwich and great PAN CON LECHON, (ROAST PORK).

[/quotE

maybe we can get together for lunch sometime. We could even make it a trifecta since Saltydad also is on my list of prospective lunch there.
