i highlighted a couple of stats I don't normally post, HR/9 and xFIP, to show how destructive the home run ball has been for Jake Irvin. Perez has a slightly better K%, but Irvin's is close. Their GB% is even closer (Irvin 36.8% vs Perez 39.2%). They have identical BB%. The big difference between the results of these two pitchers is their home run rates.

Tena not Vivas at 2B. More interesting is Butera putting House #3 vs a righty. Chappy getting a day off in favor of Pinckney, with Lile DH. Ford has shown some pop and an ability to walk in his few PAs vs righties (both homers and a double over 25 PAs, with 3 BBs).

Somewhat annoying to me is Crews hitting second. That's a big step back from Garcia / Mead. It's even a step back from Ortiz/Chappy. Crews's OPS vs RHP - .524. Young's OPS vs RHP - .642. I get wanting to give Crews a chance to work things out, but I don't see how hitting him #2 is way to get him going.

Perez has been very good since 5/22. 12 GS, 70.1 IP, 1.66 ERA. Just one rough start on 8/5 when he gave up 4 runs over 5 innings. Suppressing HRs with a 4.6 HR/FB%, 43.2 GB%.

No Kolko, Irvin is not trying to find consistent form since coming back from the IL. 4 starts, pretty consistently bad, with a 7+ ERA. Time to try for a break from that consistency

OK start for Irvin. Got through 6, and if the flare to right goes just a bit further, Crews comes up with it and gets a DP to take 2 runs off the board. 2 homers though, so lucky no one was on. maybe he's turning things around.

Welcome to the majors, Mr Tolman!

A friend from law school was named Tolman. He got into politics and eventually peaked as the D nominee for Lt Govenor in Massachusetts back in 1998. Also ran for Governor in 2002 but did not get the nomination. Lost to a classmate of mine from college.
