Eredivisie (Netherlands) got underway last weekend. Italy has the early rounds of the Coppa, as the season opener. Ligue 1 (France) returns this weekend. And, of course, our Scottish friends are already several games in...

And nowhere does this matter more than across the water in Norniron...pubs in Belfast have "NO FOOTBALL KIT" signs, which pretty much means "NO CELTIC" in certain parts of town and "NO RANGERS" in others. Last time I was there I walked through the Shankill and judging from the murals the Battle of the Somme happened last week and Rangers ascended to sports Mt Olympus.

saw an interesting thing on the Northern Ireland Catholics who fought in the Somme. There  actually was a  big number. The thought was that Britain would recognize their service so they signed up. Of course, post war, it turned into an embarrassment when the North remained under GB so families hushed it up and it became a point of pride for the Unionists.

They were well represented at Gallipoli too.  A real nose for good times...
