Grable is a reliever, but he sounds like a stud. 99.6 MPH on his fastball. If you look at his contact distribution on his FG page, he is very hard to pull.

Found this discussion of his fastball. Velocity and movement, and he doesn't walk guys.

Various articles point out Grable's lack of secondaries but that he's developing a gyro slider that tunnels with his fastball. Had TJ while in college and a meh stats his 3rd year at Indiana. but the speed jumped this year.

Bird seems to be the only awful player in the return. Cruz might already be our best bullpen arm.

The Yankees are acquiring infielder Luis García Jr. from the Nationals for four pitchers, a source told MLB.com's Mark Feinsand. In return, the Nationals will receive right-handers Yovanny Cruz, Jake Bird, Jack Cebert (the Yanks' No. 14 prospect) and Ben Grable (No. 25). The clubs have not confirmed the deal.

García’s trade value has skyrocketed in the best season of his seven-year career. The New York native is slashing .283/.313/.560 with an .873 OPS. His 23 home runs and 76 RBIs are career highs. He’s under club control through end of 2027.

García, 26, entered Sunday leading the National League in slugging percentage. In his last seven games, he is batting .367 with four doubles, one triple, two home runs, six RBIs and two runs scored.

So the assessments i'm seeing basically say Cruz is a stud and now arguably our best reliever, Bird is at worst, arguably better than most of our current relievers though a throw-in given his age. Grable has the potential to be a top reliever and Cebert is potentially a 3/4 starter.

That doesn't seem like a bad haul.

if you assume we're pulling the plug on this season and using the rest of it as development time, getting someone to play 1B (trying out some young guys we have, moving Wood there in the offseason, an acquisition of some sort) next year to replace Luis should be doable, and this is as high as we were going to be able to sell on him. it's not like he was going to be around past next year unless he severely regressed.

I think we've seen the difference 2 really good relievers could make.

I loved Luis Garcia, Jr. But he was like a joke we were all in on. When he hit a big home run, we all cheered the same way we cheer for Appalachia State against Michigan or Northern Illinois against Notre Dame: not because we actually thought Luis was good but because we love it when Jack slays the giant. None of us actually thought he was any good. And the stats say he wasn't.

Not until this year, that is. Has he suddenly turned into Mookie Betts at age 26? Seems unlikely. Toobin was smart to sell Luis at the likely peak of his value and bring three relief pitchers and a potential starter to this pitching-starved club.

We just made the trade. Luis was gone after 2027 and it’s possible but not likely he keeps hitting like this year so far. It’s a rebuild. You trade away vets for minor leaguers and hop some pan out.  If they had traded him away like everyone wanted before the season the would not have gotten this much they sold high.

In any event you can’t judge trades when they are made. Have to wait a few years. There is now an actual rebuild plan and they seem to be sticking to it rather than deviating for short term potential glory.

i think these trades are showing that Toboni expects to be competitive sooner rather than later. The big returns are all guys who are at or near the majors rather than A/A+/AA-types.
