Castillo in 2026: 5.06 ERA, 4.57 FIP

Nightengale says the White Sox are paying Castillo's entire 2026 and 2027 contract (~$45 million)

So that's how desperate teams are to trade for starting pitching.

The Dodgers have a sweetheart TV deal from MLB that no other team has, which gives the Dodgers about an extra $66 million per year. This loophole should be closed. Other than this, the Dodgers aren't doing anything not available to any other team.

The thing about the Dodgers is, yes, they have a ton of money, but they also have one of the best farm systems in the game and they are constantly drafting well and producing good prospects. The Tarik Skubal trade isn't about the Dodgers flexing their money, it is about them flexing their farm system.

Yes they got him for a song compared to projections, but maybe we should consider that a rental of Skubal just isn't that valuable. Skubal is pretty clear that he is all about the money and we should absolutely expect him to test free agency and perhaps become the highest paid pitcher of all time. Nothing wrong with that, it just means that the odds of whoever rents Skubal for the rest of 2026 signing him to an extension is pretty minimal.

Do you read these deals as impacting the Griffin market? The Castillo deal looks like it's a contract dump of a redundant asset for one useful piece, some depth, and a raffle ticket (better odds than a lottery but not as big a prize).

The problem is they were contending with the Rays and Brewers for Skubal. Those teams in particular can’t use their prospects like the Dodgers can because the only way they can become good is to develop prospects.  The Dodgers money just mean they can just go buy someone to become good.
Money isn’t just about who you get, it’s about being able to cover up your mistakes. Whether that’s letting a prospect go that ends up being a superstar, or a bad free agent signing.

Definitely going to be a work stoppage.  Looking forward to baseball in 2029.

there were reports a few weeks ago that Skubal wanted to go to the Dodgers simply because they offered the best chance to win and had the best organization.

Tigers are 2.5 back of a playoff spot right now. Consensus seems to be that the Dodgers underpaid.

Soriano has three years of control left. They basically made this trade instead of signing a free agent next year. Scherzer, Bieber, and Springer come off the books after this year. That's like 40 million freed up, plus whatever they were going to pay Guasman the rest of the year.
