Why is the pitching not getting better?
« on: July 31, 2026, 06:45:47 am »
A lot has been made of the Nationals' improvements in hitting. Guys like Mead and Ruiz were, effectively, raised from the dead. Could make the same argument for Garcia as well. Guys like Abrams and Wood are far more talented, and we're seeing this new hitting approach get the most out of them, not only in terms of performance, but also limiting the cold streaks.

We've seen these improvements throughout the farm system, with guys like King, Morales, Cruz, and others making big improvements to their swing and adding power. Coaching and technology have merged together and we are seeing the results throughout the entire organization.

But there hasn't been any improvement to the pitching. Can anyone think of a pitcher who has gotten better, either at the MLB level or in the system? I suppose you could make an argument for Cavalli, though I would also argue that a lot of his improvement started by being healthy last year and pitching (his September ERA was 3.38, with a huge drop in homers).

Is there someone else? If not, why not? I assume that Toboni and Ari are just as willing to embrace coaching, analytics, and technology in pitching as they are in hitting. I feel like we should see some sort of progress by now.

Id say Jackson Kent has taken a step up, system wise.

Beeter?

2025 is a small sample size (21 innings in DC), but he had a higher strikeout rate (13.29 vs 9.37), a slightly higher walk rate (5.82 vs 5.51) and a much lower home run rate (0.48 vs 1.38). ERA, xERA, FIP, and WHIP were all lower. I'd argue that Beeter is not as good as he was last year.

Id say Jackson Kent has taken a step up, system wise.
Kent pitched well last year though. He has advanced to Triple A, but that was probably going to happen with the old regime. Is there something specific that we can attribute to the new regime for Kent's success this year?

Mostly Kent's uptick in velocity, which has been one of the biggest reasons for his rise in status.

Lord is another who got better this year: 4.34 / 1.29 in 2025, 3.88 / 1.22 in 2026

Irvin has struggled, but overall his ERA is down from 5.70 to 5.23 this year (and I don't blame him for the fall apart last night, I think he was left in too long).

The issue is for the most part they freakin' suck. You can't make a purse out of a sows ear. Mikolas was worthless last year and Littell is just as bad.

When looking at the minors, it's hard to separate out natural progression from coached help. A guy like Robert Cranz has looked good other than a stretch adjusting to his AAA promotion (5 innings, 6 appearances, from 6/18-7/1 when he was shelled). Sime looks like he's harnessing his stuff. A few guys like Lyon have looked good after trades.

There aren't a heck of a lot guys in the majors who were here last year. Cavalli, Irvin, Ribalta, Cornelio, Alvarez. They also kept around a couple of guys DeBartolo acquired in Poulin and Beeter. Hard to see a success / fail trend for the coaches there.

The method they chose to improve organizational pitching was to get rid of most of the upper tier and replace them with guys who were released or easily acquired who had stuff they thought they could work with. The other adds were guys who had success in the past but were coming off down years. Very few of those guys have had impactful improvements. Yean is probably the best of the guys with stuff, Cosgrove maybe the best of the formerly good guys.

If there's something to ciriticize, then maybe it's the failure to coach up the guys acquired for their stuff.

Brad Lord was better as a reliever in 2025 than he is this year. 2.79 ERA and a 1.16 WHIP in 38.2 relief innings.

They acquired guys who, together, are the worst pitchers ever to put on a hat with a curly-W. That takes us back to the beginning of 1963. Add the worst to have worn a stick-W, and you are back to about 1953, the earliest I can remember. This year's bullpen is full of worthless sludge.

As Walter Haight taught us, if you keep making $2 bets on the long shot, you will go broke.

(For youngsters, especially if you did not grow up in The District, Haight was the horse-racing reporter for The Post, 1923-1968)

No sense rushing Early...maybe give him a spot start every now and then...maybe even to to a 6 man rotation.  There's no need to worry about wins and losses this year...

I’m thinking that it is the dilution of talent with the expansion to 30 teams from the early days of 16. The reality is that to make the show you have to be an exceptional talent and there just aren’t enough players that fit that category.

Not sure I buy that really.  US population has more than doubled since those days, and we effectively have the whole world to draw from.

They need to go back to starters working complete (+/-) games on 3 days rest and relievers brought in just for 9th inning saves...
