Grant Paulsen tweeted that Contreras ran very close to Cavalli after the third out of the first inning and may have even shoulder checked him while going back to the bench.

Always helpful to know the back story...or at least what may be a part of it...

Post-game interview Cade said Contreras brushed him running back after the third inning, so clearly a motivator for Cade's later comment.

Win tomorrow and it’s a 4-2 road trip.

I dunno, Mead looks good at 3B

He has zero range and the arm of a first baseman

Yes he’s minus 6 OAA. Not good.

Zuck:
Quote
It wasn’t a vicious brawl, but it was as physical an altercation as the Nationals have been in with an opposing team in years. And at the heart of it was Cavalli’s usage of the word “boy,” which could be construed as offensive when directed at a Latino ballplayer.

“To be honest, I don’t know,” Contreras told reporters. “I don’t know. I’m Venezuelan. I don’t know if it’s racist or not, but I’ll let MLB handle that.”

Cavalli suggested what he said wasn’t out of the ordinary for the situation.

“I thought he would just hear me and understand that we’re competitive,” the right-hander said. “I think people tell everybody to sit down at some point in their career. It’s not a big deal.”

Cavalli also expressed sympathy to Contreras and fellow Venezuelans, whose emotions remain raw following last week’s devastating earthquake.

“I have extreme respect for him,” he said. “My heart goes out to Venezuela. I know what he’s going through. It breaks my heart what he’s going through.”

He has zero range and the arm of a first baseman

Not sure about zero range, but he is fundamentally sound in his positioning and has his head in the game, making throws to the right bases in the right situations.  Glove seems fine.  He is the best option for us by far at present.  His OPS plus = 116 and he's OPS-ing .780, so a positive contribution in a strong lineup.

His range factor (Per Baseball Reference) is middle of the pack (22nd out of 41 with 200 innings or more) at 3rd, meaning he makes an average number of plays (putouts and assists) at the position.  We've had plenty of options worse than average so I'm fine with Mead unless someone better comes along.  Seems to be a good fit for the clubhouse culture, for what that's worth.

He is perfectly adequate, as per DRs, OAA, and UZR.
