Caps Acquire Forward Jordan Kyrou from St. Louis Blues.  Kyrou is 28 years old and a 3 time 30 goal scorer.

Kyrou is a former Sarnia Sting (Ontario, Canada) teammate of Jacob Chychrun.

Forwards Connor McMichael and Milton Gastrin, plus Washington’s 16th overall pick in the 2026 NHL Draft were sent to St. Louis.

The Caps still have the #18 pick in the First Round of the NHL Draft.

If Kyrou approaches the production we got out of Oshbabe in that deal with the Blues...this will be Monumental...

Elliotte Friedman reports that Buffalo will move on from Tuch and will seek a sign-and-trade. He also reports the Capitals are considered the favorites to land such a deal. I wonder what Buffalo's return would be.

Yea it was a sign and trade. Free agency does not officially start for a few days.

Seems the Caps also sent Kampf to the Sabres. I'm glad they didn't give up much in this trade, but I can't help but wonder whether the contract might handcuff them in later years.

• Vincent Desharnais. Four years, $4.2M cap hit.
• Justin Holl. One year, $900K cap hit.
• Jonny Brodzinski. One year, $850K cap hit.

Puckpedia shows $3,475,417 of cap space remaining. My gut suggests that means Ovechkin has told them he's not returning. I'm genuinely torn on whether I'd like to be proven wrong.

I could see Ovi signing for $5+/- MM to get another year in...or the Caps blowing thru the cap somewhat knowing that they are gonna let some of their FA's move on and the cap going up again next year.

He certainly wasn't worth that to us as a 34 year old 3rd pair defenseman...

There seem to be a couple of possibilities. One is that Sandin seems likely to begin the season on LTIR, so that frees up some portion of his cap space (I don't know how exactly you calculate the relief). Ovechkin is also over 35, which means he can sign an incentive-laden contract with a smaller cap hit (I don't know exactly how that works either, but Malkin just did that in Pittsburgh).

That's interesting...I get a sense that he's coming back.  On paper at least, this team seems to have a chance to go deep...depending largely upon the netminders...
