And no i didnt make a prediction this year for two reasons
1 work has been insane - i manage a major retail establishment and been way over worked and understaffed and 2) major issues with family health issues, so life got in the way and I forgot.

As for the rest anyone saying I said we had the best roster must be a politician and take comments out of context. I said we have the best offense - not the best roster. Said our fielding was bad, too many errors, that our starting pitching was acceptable and our bullpen is the worst in the majors.
Sorry for your health issues.

There is still half season left.  I think the bullpen will improve some but the hitting will regress.  But other han the Phillies don;t see any of the other teams pulling away. Maybe the Cubs.  They should be able to stay in and find a couple relievers.

Cheers.

LOL they’re 1 game out of a wild card spot. And yes management is cheap and should sell the team.

I think sixthree meant that it's too late as, it's too late now into the season to sign any good free agents. Which I would agree with, this should've been done in the Winter.

Only option now is to get good relievers thru trades, but who knows if we'll still be in contention one month from today.

Bullpen arms are pretty volatile anyway. The offseason signings don’t work out many times  even for the top teams. Best thing is to try and convert your own starters.  Has worked with Lord until last night.  Not so much with Parker.  Got to try and grab some guys off the scrap heap and hope some of them work.

Toboni may want to call Rizzo for some tips on that process...

Well, it's best to try and sign a reliable free agent reliever IMO and "shoot your shot" rather than be content with the crap we have. Tyler Rogers signed with the Jays last December; had we signed him before the Jays, we'd probably have 2 less losses in the "L" column this season right now with him alone (yes he blew a save opp. last night against the Astros but our bp blew like 7+ games so far this season)

Crazy how if Wood had held onto that ball, the conversation would be so different right now.

That's where late inning defensive replacements come into play...especially with a below average fielder like Wood.  Of course, that didn't work for the Brewers in 2019...thankfully...

There's not a late-inning defensive replacement on the roster that would be an upgrade over Wood.

Still not sure why Wood was playing RF and Crews in LF though. Maybe Butera saw data that the Phillies LH-heavy lineup hits to opposite field?

Gonna let this run a while more.  If you want  to talk about moves and non-moves for the roster, remember there's a Toboni thread as well as a bullpen thread.

Regarding Wood's D, I think a case can be made that the best defensive alignment is Lile in left, Young in center, and Crews in right. While last night had a lot of missed plays in right, I think the only big bad fielding event was in the failure  to pick up the ball off the wall that allowed ??? to turn a double into a triple. Crews doesn't get near the foul that flicked off of Wood's glove because he's  not tall enough; that was at the limits of Wood's height and jump, and his jump goes higher than Crews's. It was a tough play because it was right against the portion of the foul wall that juts up for 6 or so feet. It looked like to me that the ball popped out before the contact there, but that would have been a difficult catch even if his glove had hit the top of the fence. The drop in the 9th came after a heck of a run and dive. I'll be curious what likelihood bin that was in. Wood's D in right has been significantly better than in left, so  I get the Crews in left alignment.

Maybe the management quibble would have been to insert Lile and adjust the D for the 9th. With Abrams hurting, Lile and Millas were the last 2 left on the bench. Ultimately, I don't think Crews in right changes the game.

Wood's natural position is RF and he was moved out of left at the beginning of this year.  2026 Games by Position: LF (14) RF (57)

Having a better option for playing the outfield is likely something that should be considered when making up the lineup card...and/or constructing the roster...

I’m curious. What do the defensive stats say about Wood this year. He seems much better in RF but I haven’t seen as many games as others.  Or looked at stats.

Lile has looked good in left this year. It's just small numbers so you and Butera can have a different judgement but I think Lile  7,  Young 8, Crews 9 is an upgrade defensively.

Butera has pretty consistently gone with Crews in left when Wood is in the field in recent games. I forget when it started. Wood looks more comfortable in right, and Crews is good at any OF position.

The eye test backs up what you've said here.  Not saying that anyone else get's that ball and holds on to it...just that even while playing better in right, Wood remains somewhat of a defensive liability...

It's too small to judge but he's played 4 times as many innings in right as left with the same Outs Above (below in his case) average and fielding run value using Statcast, so on a per inning basis, he's much better in right.

Rough game but we were probably due for a result like this.  Shake it off and move on.
