IIRC Džeko grew up there during the siege. Fortunately for all of us he wasn't spotted by some Moscow oligarch on safari
USA will meet the Bosniaks next week.  Sarajevo is a beautiful place btw.

So, despite the general consensus that the new format isn't great, Infantino's response is to double-down and propose expanding future WC's to 64 clubs (he needs the votes to remain in office). All that would do is spread the meaningless nature of the Group stage to qualification...

In contrast, there has been widespread acclaim for the US organization of the tournament - great stadia and facilities, and so on.

It seems like it would also either further reduce the number of potential host countries or else more or less ensure that most editions would have to be co-hosted in order to have an adequate number of venues, unless perhaps they were to attempt staging doubleheaders (e.g., for the first two rounds of the group stage, holding both games in a given group back-to-back in the same stadium, although that might make ticketing even more of a nightmare than it already is).

They’re never going back to 32 teams. More teams = more games = more money.

It’s just like March madness.  Yes the quality gets diluted some and some blowouts but the upsets are magnified. I believe scoring per game is up over and seems less of those 0-0 matches where neither team is interested in trying to score.

And yes they will need multiple countries to host with all these games. Can’t see them going to 64 now.

Something I found myself pondering this weekend: Soccer's rules are inconsistent. One of the major differences between soccer and football is that in the former, the "whole of the ball" must be all the way over the entirety of the white line for it to be a goal, or for the ball to be out of bounds, whereas in football it's enough for the ball to "break the plane" by even the tiniest amount. The famous 2017 incident when Gene Steratore slid an index card down the first-down poll to see whether the ball would move is a great example of the latter.

Yet when it comes to the offside rule in soccer, as we saw in the past few days, the rule is "breaking the plane." Consider how in the one game it was enough for a player's toes to be over the imaginary line, and in another game it was a part of a player's butt-cheeks that protruded across. I found myself thinking that it's peculiar how the rule is "the whole of the ball" for scoring and out-of-bounds but "breaking the plane" for offside and I found myself wondering why the rules are inconsistent in that manner.

It's only the traditional power nations that have a problem with giving Cape Verde a chance at the 32. I think 7 African teams advanced. All that's pretty fun.

Italy should probably switch federations to CAF.  Sicily is pretty close.

Italy I guess is the big Euro who can say "we could have done what these teams 33-48 did." Europe had a ton of qualifiers.

If they really want more games, then could they go to 2 group stages and limit the knock outs to the quarters, semis, and final?

The offside rule is currently under review...

It's isn't the less fancied nations that are the problem, it's the relative lack of jeopardy and too many meaningless games - including the suspicion of 'silent collusion', whereby teams play out a game, with little effort, so that both get the outcome they want (for example, Australia v Paraguay or Austria v Algeria).

Didn’t England and USA do that last Cup? Seems like a risk no matter how many teams are involved. And on previous Cups we know the top nations will advance. They almost always do.

I think the one thing they need to reexamine is the bracketing. They should reseed after the group stage. Brazil and Japan and then Netherlands and Morocco will be fun but all those teams are top 16.

had a call earlier with some folks in France and of course the topic of the World Cup came up. They were shocked to learn that people in the US are actually paying attention to it. Their general belief was that the US doesn't care about soccer.

Haaland's choice of souvenirs is breaking the Internet: https://www.si.com/soccer/erling-haaland-choice-world-cup-souvenir-on-brand-so-american
raccoon have notoriously hard skulls. No doubt it would be an advantage if they were 6' 5" like Haaland.

This tracks. My Norwegian cousins used to love coming to America and soaking up as much local kultur as possible. Leaving tasteful understatement behind and driving Route 66 in a pink cadillac is like the national dream.

the raccoon wasn't his only purchase. He also picked up a stuffed squirrel wearing a cowboy hat, and another stuffed squirrel drinking from a partially crushed can of Budweiser.

This is from a UNICEF calendar photo shoot in 2007.  The guy in white is Messi. The baby in the bath tub is Lamine Yamal. This is not AI.

Wait...so UNICEF predicted this matchup 19 years ago?

Argies showed off a banner claiming the Malvinas after the game. FIFA investigating.

via @unicef:

Yes, those photos you’ve seen are real.

More than 18 years ago, a baby named Lamine Yamal and his mom Sheila met Lionel Messi at a UNICEF fundraising photoshoot.

Today, their achievements on the pitch inspire millions. Off the pitch, both Messi and Lamine Yamal use their voices and platforms as UNICEF Goodwill Ambassadors to support and advocate for children around the world.

The goal? That every child survives, thrives, and fulfils their potential.

We are proud to have them on our team.

It was completely by chance. Yamal's parents entered him into a lottery that he won, and he was randomly assigned to be photographed with Messi.
