The offensive defense

Worst defense in baseball. Butera says they will do more pregame drills.

It’s long past time to move CJ to second.

I read…somewhere (I think some article about players getting traded before the deadline) that CJ is the worst defender on like outs above average in all of baseball. I don’t really get it but like yeah he won’t be playing short for a competitor so we might as well stop pretending.

Yeah, it was an article in players most likely to get traded.

I was told that a new coaching staff would fix this ....

Its either that, or play some combination of Vivas/Tena/Mead at 2B. Nunez is currently rocking a sub .550 OPS

When was the last time we had a manager talk about winning?

Third is the bigger issue.

Yes. House gets to a lot of balls but boots them.

Does he have that much range? His assist numbers are middle of the league.

well, he doesn't get an assist on a ball he cuts off and boots. His arm is strong but a bit scattershot, too. A 3rd factor in assists ground out to air out ratio for the pitching staff.

The time to have done more pre-game drills was before you became the worst defense in MLB...

You can't make chicken salad out of chicken crap no matter how much you try.  If these guys haven't gotten it by the time they've gotten to the Bigs, they're not likely to ever get it...

Yep. They said they were doing pre-game drills at the beginning of the season. Did they stop and restart? Or they now doing massive amounts of drills pre-game?

House is a little weird. He was a positive fielder last year but negative this year. He seems more aggressive at 3rd than last year. IDK if there's some sort of new positioning he's adjusting to this year.

I don't think there's an issue defensively at 2nd with Nunez getting most of the innings. There's a hitting issue, but the d stats should be pretty good.

Wood actually looks good in right. All of  his misplays have come in left.

1st base is as much of a mess as 3rd. It probably doesn't help the fielders with their  throws to have Garcia and Mead over there.

Wood makes some really great plays on defense, but always looks to be on the verge of injuring himself. I'd rather see him DH and concentrate on hitting.

Yes...he's been good in RF...especially compared to his performances in LF.  Plus...he seems top be having fun out there, so leave him be...

No errors today. Apparently defense got  emphasized during the pre-game workouts

Right, nothing like a little emphasis to whip them into shape.  We should be league average for the rest of the season now.

I mean, isn't this what we always complained about with the old regime? There was no correction from the coaching staff when it was obvious that young players needed it. Buttera said he was unhappy with the fielding and the next morning, everyone is in doing ST-like drills for fielding.

The point really was that you don't wait until you are the worst in baseball...you incorporate these drills right from the get-go.  Their shortcomings have always been obvious...

Is the improvement based on practice making them better, or due to the punitive aspect?

I don’t think Davey's crew thought it was his job to teach. His comment about it's not the coaches' fault reveals his attitude about basic skills.

This team has been near the bottom defensively for years. Butera is much more about development.

Those are not mutually exclusive.

Yep. And, to be fair, I do see both sides of that argument.
