Padres to be Sold for $3.9 Billion
« on: April 17, 2026, 11:42:56 am »
Gives the Lerners a very encouraging comp.  Padres are worth more than the Nats as one of the top draws in the league, but it makes the Lerner hopes for a number closer to 3 billion more realistic.

I hope Orsillo gets a cut. Vital to their TV ratings.

His call when the Padres came back from 6 runs down to win with 2 outs in the 9th. The reddit has the booth camera for his call, the facebook has the runs scoring play shots with his call.

$3 billion is only realistic if the can find a buyer. They couldn’t at 2.whatever, so I doubt they will at 3

Leonsis offered over 2. The rumors were that the Lerners wanted what Cohen paid for the Mets.

The other big winner is the MLBPA. If the Padres are worth $3.9 billion, the financial situation of MLB owners can't be anywhere near as bad as owners claim.

Also shows how foolish the Lerners have been.  The Padres invested in their payroll and became a top draw.  Extending Tatis, Cronenworth, and Merrill, they've become the anti-Nats in terms of keeping their own players.

If the Lerners took pride in the product, and stopped turning the franchise into a joke with endless salary dumps, team would be worth a lot more.

Fundamentally, the Lerners don't know the business and trusted the World Series guys to be able to run it on a budget. When July 2021 happened, they told Rizzo to start over and he agreed he could do it with a lower payroll over a few years.

The Lerners are leaving money on the table. Idiots. Maybe they know real estate, but they certainly know nothing about owning a professional team. Especially in a sport without a salary cap.

They no doubt have some positive cash flow now and aren’t putting any mental effort into it.  They do seem shortsighted in thinking a bad team will increase the value.  They are satisfied with the status quo.  Which is bad for the fans.

I think they’re hoping the union gets crushed and the league ends up with a hard salary cap. That, theoretically, shoots up franchise values
