Sorting the record by games played vs by date
« on: April 16, 2026, 07:05:28 pm »
This post kicked off a nice discussion about one of our WNFF quirks. A long time member, Old Chelsea, used to post an updated record to date comparison of the current Nats team to prior Nats teams after each win. We've continued the tradition after his passing. It's a less useful way to organize a comparison than record by games played. That said, it could be labor intense to redo things manually and we might have to do it every game to manage the list on an ongoing basis. The Chief suggests AI might help. Weigh in below. I am reluctant to put in the effort personally but with help we might be able to pull this oof.  JCA

Thank you to friends old and new who participated by viewing or posting comments.

With the :w: posted, we honor the memory of our friend Old Chelsea with the traditional post that tracks the Nats wins to date, in Anglophile style.

Sort it any way you want, even sniffing .500 after almost 20 games is a welcome change.  Not going to get my hopes up of course, but it'd be great if this drags on for a while

It's interesting to see the company this season is keeping. Within 2 games of this year's pace are the world series team, another above .500 team, 2021 (good until injuries catered them in July), 2024, where we had "should the Nats go for the wild card" into mid-May, and a complete disaster in 2025. 2010 was the start of improving. That might be this team

Sorting the list by match rather than calendar date...

This was how I always thought it should be done.

While I liked Old Chelsea, I always thought that his method was nonsensical. I think I posted it by match number instead of calendar date a few times. Old Chelsea has passed away; he won't mind if we update the method... along with the team's management.
 :stir:
Now if only we can get an owner who is interested in winning...

I'm not going through 162 games for 20+ years to re-sort this. We can occasionally or periodically re-do the sort for record by game. I did it a bit last year in a separate clubhouse thread.

I hate to say it but this is the sort of thing that AI excels at.

I still  want to do the OC way as a tribute, but I'm game at doing it both record to date and record by games played if someone does the sorting stuff or can give me a query for this. Maybe something like "Sort the Nationals record through [X] games for each season since 2005."

I think the way we've always done it is fine, I was just commenting.

seems like sorting by # of games rather than date is more informative. Just my .02

Of course, but that's not how done historically by OC.

Let's continue the discussion in the Clubhouse rather than the GDT that I can now close.

I added some thoughts and history in the opening post
One point I would want thought on is whether we would need to do record by games played each game. The easy thing about the OC method is I can just go to the GDT archives, copy the post from last year with the same wins, paste it into the latest win, then just add this year. If you do record by game, just updating when you win would leave you with a mishmash of records that hadn't been updated for maybe 2-3 seasons.  It would be simpler to update every game, but more work. AI might help the sorting.

At any rate, the wrap up post is mostly an OC tribute so there's a big part of me that wants to retain that.

Perhaps the best thing to do is to have a Clubhouse thread that periodically resorts the OC post when we want to do a record by games played comparison?

Seasons sorted by games played to reach 13 wins. Teams in green were > .500 to 13 wins, teams in red were <.500. Playoff teams in italics. 2019 is underlined. 2026 is bold.

2016 - 23rd April (17th match of season)
2012 - 24th April (17th match)
2017 - 23rd April (18th match)

2010 - 30th April (23rd match)
2005 - 30th April (24th match)
2014 - 25th April (24th match)
2013 - 27th April (24th match)

2024 - 28th April (27th match)
2011 - 1st May (27th match)
2015 - 4th May (27th match)
2025 - 27th April (28th match)
2021 - 7th May (28th match)

2019 - 2nd May (30th match)
2008 - 3rd May (31st match)
2023 - 4th May (31st match)
2020 - 4th September (37th match)
2006 - 14th May (38th match)
2007 - 14th May (38th match)
2022 - 19th May (39th match)

It's not hard to re-sort updated OC lists after each win. It's more effort to do a 1 to 162 list for record by game.

The tougher to remember season start for me is 2010. That team got off to a hot start but eventually slumped enough to get the Rendon pick

2010 - 6th May (28th match)

2018 - 2nd May (31st match)

2024 - 3rd May (32nd match)
2011 - 6th May (32nd match)
2021 - 14th May (34th match)
2026 - 3rd May (35th match)
2025 - 4th May (35th match)
2008 - 8th May (35th match)
2019 - 9th May (37th match)
2023 - 10th May (37th match)
2020 - 7th September (40th match)
2007 - 17th May (41st match)
2006 - 20th May (43rd match)
2022 - 26th May (45th match)
2009 - 2nd June (51st match)

Hard to remember but 2024 had a strong enough start that we had a thread about whether the team should add and push for the playoffs that was active for much of the first half of the season . That team was only 1 under .500 77 games into the season. The 2021 team was above .500 near the end of June.

More easy to recall, the 2019 had not yet started its run. And, of course, 2005 was in the middle of a great 1st half.

19th win is always a good check in point because of 19-31 in 2019.

Seasons sorted by games played to reach 19 wins. Teams in green were > .500 to 19 wins, teams in red were <.500. Playoff teams in italics. 2019 is underlined. 2026 is bold.

2016 - 4th May (27th match of season)
2017 - 4th May (28th match)
2012 - 10th May (31st match)
2014 - 7th May (34th match)

2013 - 9th May (34th match)
2010 - 12th May (34th match)
2015 - 13th May (35th match)
2018 - 7th May (36th match)
2005 - 14th May (36th match)
2024 -  10th May (37th match)

2026 - 8th May (39th match)
2011 - 15th May (40th match)
2021 - 22nd May (42nd match)
2008 - 18th May (45th match)
2019 - 18th May (45th match)
2025 - 16th May (46th match)
2023 - 20th May (46th match)
2007 - 24th May (48th match)
2006 - 25th May (48th match)
2020 - 18th September (49th match)
2022 - 3rd June (54th match)
2009 - 18th June (65th match)

Other than 2019, the playoff teams had risen to the top by now, just short of 1/4 of the way through the season.
