Lugo signed a 2 year, 46 million dollar extension. He was also 35.

I think the idea behind 3 years, 45 million is way to little for Griffin. Even accounting for only this season, he's 31, pitching well, AND left handed. Think he can garner 20 million AAV over at least three years. I don't see him taking much of a "home town" discount when this is going to be his only real shot at a big contract.

I used to think 3 years, $15 AAV  would get it done, but I'm probably wrong. It's an auction, and there's usually a winner's curse of overpaying. Maybe offer 2 years, $20 million each, with a 3rd year option and a $4 million buyout. Decent score for a guy with a 1 year track record

I also think I'd be perfectly happy to give him the QO and hope he takes it. I'd rather spend 22-23 million next year to see how legit this is. Especially with the likelihood of a shortened season.

I think that is why he likely wouldn't take it.  He's got two downsides there: shortened season, prorated salary on what's likely to be his peak AAV, and pitch his was into a worse contract; no season at all, lose the entire salary.  Gotta think he's looking at least 3 years in part because of the risk of missing next year.

Which brings some interesting game theory into it: if you think he's likely declining the offer (or at at least, you're offering it to him), is what you're getting in trade better than the comp pick plus pool money?  Probably, but you'd need to price it in.

There's also one additional layer of game theory: he likely wants to be traded, because that makes the comp pick evaporate and thus his mobility go way up in FA.

Exactly.  There is no such thing as a bad one-year contract, at least for a healthy MLB starting pitcher.

This whole thing is going to be a mess, because his trade market is dependent more than anything else on who gets Skubal and for what.  My bet would be Griffin goes to the Rays right before the deadline.  They have the need, prospects, and the lack of budget, plus the organizational connection and philosophy.
