DC to Lerners: Please Sell
« on: April 06, 2026, 02:56:33 pm »
Probably should have a new thread dedicated to this topic.

Interesting exchange with Ben Clemens in his FG chat today:
https://blogs.fangraphs.com/ben-clemens-fangraphs-chat-4-6-26/

Clemens speculated that, on occasions, prospects get pushed to the majors too soon to try to get the incentives for high placement in the RoTY voting for a rookie who is top 100 and starts the year on the on the major league roster, but could not think of a good example in the moment.

The management of Dylan Crews and James Wood are great examples of the "Lerners Are Cheap" viewpoint that simmers among Nats fans. Wood arguably was held down until after the Super 2 deadline when he dominated in the Spring and early season (his oblique end of May was convenient) while Crews was rushed despite holes in order to game for the extra pick.

Yeah, I have heard variations on this from Nats fan friends as well

Wood being seemingly held down is one that sticks in my  mind as a bad look

IIRC Rizzo was adamant that Wood was only delayed because of his oblique injury.

I think the point was there was gaming before the oblique, and the oblique ended up a convenient excuse.
