NOTUS (WP 2.0?)
« on: March 17, 2026, 12:10:00 pm »
Carrying this over from the sports-section focused discussion in The Clubhouse, here's a story on Robert Allbritton's effort to transform NOTUS into a DC-focused news and media outlet to fill some of the void left by the WP.

"Washington Pre" would seem the obvious choice.

I assume you got the reference in Ali's comment? If not, the Washington Evening Star was, as its name implied, an afternoon newspaper that competed with the Post for many years. It folded in August 1981; by that time, its name was simply the Washington Star ("Evening" was dropped sometime in the 1970s). The Washington Times was founded about a year after the Star folded in an attempt to provide competition for the Post, though of course the Times has ordinarily been a morning paper (the only afternoon edition I remember was an "Extra" published in the afternoon on September 11, 2001; if you know your history, you can readily see why that occurred).

I can't say I recall. I was eight years old when it folded and I don't ever remember my parents reading the Star. They subscribed to the Post for as long as I can remember.

The Star's building I think has the Fogo de Chao on the ground floor now. On Pennsylvania at 11th. Opposite the Old PO tower.

In Philly you were either a morning Inquirer or afternoon Bulletin family.  We had the Bulletin delivered. Summers though I used to like to buy a Daily News for the ball scores.  It was a rag but good sports section. I forget when the Bulletin disappeared.

I really hope they change the name. NOTUS looks like "NOT US."

My response was tongue-in-cheek - 'Morning Star' is the name of the daily paper of the British Communist Party... :D  ;)

wasn't sure you were up on the Washington history of Evening Star. But of  course the Morning Star went over our heads.

The Star had west coast box scores.

Also Gene Mueller was the outdoors writer.  He was a very traditional "hook and bullet" guy, but was very plugged in to the local/regional scene with good sources for fishing reports, where to go type articles.  The Post had C. Boyd Pfeiffer, who was knowledgable but not the least bit approachable or friendly.  He was succeeded at the Post by Angus Phillips, who was a good writer but was nearly a beginner at hunting and fishing.  And he would write the occasional article about sailing.

Mueller was a bit cranky at times, but was easy to talk to if you didn't trigger him, and a wealth of knowledge.  Our family subscribed to both the Star and the Post.  What did they each cost, $3.50 a month or so for home delivery?

CBS just announced the shut-down of CBS News Radio, after more than 100 years.

IIRC, WTOP is an affiliate.

Yes on wtop  although they also pick up some ABC feeds.

I used to rely on the 6 AM CBS news for stories about high profile overnight incidents relevant to my line of work. I was able to add to a rulemaking record some "flavor" by citing incidents I heard about that way. The incidents would often be mentioned because they were the biggest thing to happen overnight

CBS’s NFL costs  are expected to increase by as much as 50% effective next season. There are a lot more cuts coming
