Venezuela and DR will both advance from their pool.  Also PR from its pool.  USA has not clinched yet despite being 3-0.

So five teams in so far including Japan and Korea. Will assume that the second team from the USA pool will come down to Mexico and Italy game tomorrow.
only if USA  beats Italy. Could get a 3 way tie if Italy beats USA and  Mexico beats Italy.

DeRosa is going to get his bench in today, not that they aren't mostly starter worthy. Gunar, Goldy, etc. Curious to see how McLean looks.

De Rosa explained he kept Boyd in to face Duran because of the lefty lefty history, breaking balls, and managing depth in the bullpen knowing that some would be needed today if McLean doesn't go deep.

DeRosa basically managing this round like Sprin training. Everyone has to play, everyone gets time off.

Loss tonight, Mex win v Italy, and it comes down to the 3 way tie breaker.

Would be hilarious if the USA get eliminated. Sounds like they have the run differential at this point. I think Nola starts tomorrow against Mexico.

World Series parade preparations on the South Side of Chicago are on hold as key White Sox catching prospect Kyle Teel appears to have pulled or torn his hamstring while playing for Team Italy. He had a HR in the game and injured himself legging out a double.

If Teel doesn't pan out as a prospect, there will always be bitter men in Chicago saying things would have been different if not for the WBC injury. Critics of the WBC always seize on these injuries as an argument against the tournament (or at least against their favorite teams players participating in the tournament) but I don't see how it's any riskier than Spring Training.

If Mexico wins and scores 4 runs or fewer, USA is eliminated.

Also just more evidence that anything can happen in baseball in a single game even with great talent discrepancies between the teams playing. So good news for anyone hoping to avoid a Dodgers three-peat.

MLB doenst play single eliminations. Or pools with tiebreaker rules.

No, but they still play very short series for playoffs, and the talent discrepancy there is much much smaller. Team USA is miles better than the current Dodgers and whoever the Dodgers play will be miles better than Team Italy.

DeRosa didn't realize the US could still be eliminated in this round. Probably for the best that we didn't hire him as our manager.

Not showing smarts for an ivy leaguer. Too many blows to the head at QB. Perfect for tv commentary. Never want any facts to get in the way there.

Hello!  You play to win the game, Mark...
Interesting enough, almost everything that Michael Baumann pointed out as a flaw in DeRosa's approach to the lineup and the rotation before the tournament started came back to bite him.
https://blogs.fangraphs.com/lets-make-hasty-judgments-about-mark-derosas-lineup/
While the lineup almost could not go wrong, it still wasn't optimized (he suggested Judge leadoff, Raleigh 3rd,Witt  4th,  Bregman 8th), and he had suggested throwing McLean against either GBR or Brazil as they were the softer opponents.  That said, Judge more or less has said he hates leadoff, and McLean was ill before the tournament so had to be pushed back  to the end, so it is understandable.

So, with Italy scoring 5, they either win or Mexico scores 6. Either way, USA advances unless it's extra innings. At that point, the runs allowed/defensive innings gets weird

Get weird? All the tiebreakers are weird.

Nola with a gem so far. Just 60 pitches with one out in the fifth.

It's our tribute to Susan Sarandon. Let's do the time warp again.

The Chief doesn't like changing titles after a few days, so when this was caught the first time I didn't change it. However, I think it may be causing some confusion, so even though we are on the 3rd page, I  will change the title.

I'm starting to think we've opened up a time portal. :)
I'm going with Japan over Cuba.   8)

Given that we already know the results, having happened 20 years ago
remember, The Chief doesn't like us changing thread titles after a few days

USA  changing the roster for this round, bringing in some short relievers and dropping some of the long guys like Wacha and Yarbrough.
