Israel held back Dean Kremer for its 2nd game vs Nicaragua to get the win they needed to qualify for the next wbc rather than throwing him in a game vs Venezuela or the DR. Worked as he went 4.1 shutout in their 5-0 win. After playing the DR today, they have the Dutch for their last game. Winner likely is 3rd in the pool.

Aus loses to Korea, 7-2, which probably kills their shot at the quarters

Looking at the mlb site Japan and Korea have advanced. Japan won the pool. Korea finished in a three way tie with Australia and Taipei. So apparently they won the tiebreaker. The USA pool interesting. Three teams at 2-0. And two at 0-3.

it's top 2 in a pool, with a formula for breaking ties. 2-2 is not that uncommon. Last timer around, the pool Korea was in had all 5 teams 2-2, and Korea did not advance. I would think 1st tie breaker would be head to head, then it's runs against over innings (to take care of mercy rule games). Aus gave Japan a good game, but Yoshida hit a decisive 2 run go ahead HR.

Yoshida is having a good tournament. It'll be interesting to see if he gets a chance to play for the Sox and if he can still hit. He actually hit pretty well before getting hurt and missing a lot of the past 2 seasons.

cost a run. No need to be that aggressive against this piece of meat pitcher. Witt, Harper and Judge were coming up and you could have had 2d and 3d 1 out. I'll take my chances. Outs are precious for this lineup

so, left the bases loaded in the 1st, had a runner out at home in the 2d, stranded a runner at 2nd as well. Gil is smart to get him out. Got to feel lucky he got 2 Ip without a run.

Because drafting HSers is a complete crapshoot.

Ricky Henderson was a 4th rounder. Wade Boggs in the 7th. Cal Ripken in the 2nd round

Venezuela and DR will both advance from their pool. Also PR from its pool. USA has not clinched yet despite being 3-0.

So five teams in so far including Japan and Korea. Will assume that the second team from the USA pool will come down to Mexico and Italy game tomorrow.
