Computer issue...

Have a Dell All-In-One...have had it for 5+ years...

I'm generally happy with it, but over the past few days, it will randomly disconnect from the internet.  I go to settings and tell it to reconnect...it says it's connected when it really isn'n't.

All the other internet devices in the house continue to work without issue.

This one will then reconnect after between 30 and 90 minutes without me having done anything to really prompt it.

Any thoughts?

If I were to buy a new All-In-One...what sort of device should I purchase to move my programs and data over from the old one to the new one without importing this issue as well?

TIA

I would expect it's a hardware issue rather than a profile issue so you shouldn't need to worry about it moving to a new machine with you, or security software. Here's a few quick notes on what you can do to troubleshoot:

If you've got expired antivirus software, uninstall it. McAfee is -notorious- for screwing you over if you let their products expire. They will simply block DNS traffic so your machine shows that it's online but when you pull up a web browser you get nothing. If that fixes the issue, there are other free products out there, or you can use Windows Defender - it's honestly massively improved over what it used to be.

To deal with the most likely hardware issues, click on Start, type 'cmd,' look for 'command prompt' in the results, right click it and select 'Run as administrator.'
After it opens the window, type netsh int ip reset and press enter. Should say 'Ok' after a second or two. Then, shut down your computer normally, disconnect the power cable, hold the power button for 10-15 seconds, then plug the power cable back in and fire it up.

Lastly, you can create a new profile and use that for a bit to see if the issue happens there as well. If it does, you don't need to worry about it following you if you move.

When did the BBC get a paywall

Was supposed to start before Christmas, but links I posted then still worked - looks like it's now taken effect. And it's only for the US...

(it's only for news - other areas of the site should still be OK)

The story was about a young cat that was lost during it's keepers visit to Belgium - after five months of living feral it has been found and returned to the UK...

Following on from Drac's (as always) great advice you could also try the basics:

Check network drivers are up to date (incompatability between drivers and router is a common cause of random disconnections). However, if there has been a recent update, you may want to consider rolling-back to the previous version, if all was well then.

Run Network Adapter troubleshooter. (in 'Settings' - 'Network & Internet')  Then run 'network reset'.

When in 'command prompt' you could also try      netsh int tcp set heuristics disabled
netsh int tcp set global autotuninglevel=disabled
netsh int tcp set global rss=enabled
netsh winsock reset and press Enter
                                                                                         ipconfig /release and press Enter
                                                                                         ipconfig /renew and press Enter
                                                                                         ipconfig /flushdns and press Enter

Thanks Drac & EN...this has just been so random...4 times in 3 days with no real clue why it disconnects or why it comes back on...

My Norton is current and I updated my drivers...if that doesn't do the trick, I will delve into your other suggested solutions...

I also pissed off the HOA by nagging about the crappy snow removal job they did on my cul-de-sac, so it could be just about anyone at this point!

Quote
DC Water is taking emergency measures with the immediate and ongoing closure of all northbound lanes of 14th Street between L Street NW and Thomas Circle, due to the imminent risk of collapse posed by an abandoned, century-old, bricklined sewer tunnel beneath the roadway. The street was initially closed out of an abundance of caution early Saturday morning, due to the instability of the roadway under the weight of vehicular traffic. Subsequent engineering investigations have confirmed that urgent stabilization measures are required to prevent the roadway from collapsing and to ensure the safety of the public.

She’s still responsible for two murders. Time served would have been ridiculous

10 I think was the max she could get for what she pleaded to, so no credit for cooperation. Sure she might have been undercharged as part of the deal, but there's no conviction without her cooperation.

Tmie served was too light, but something like 3 years might have made sense

Well finally broke down and did my taxes using software.  Felt a bit weird. It was free filing Turbo Tax before end of February. Onward and upward.

I've been using TT for a decade but always the online version.  I have 2 form K-1's though and the online version has a limitation that makes entry of those convoluted and actually inaccurate.  I've read the physical discs are superior for K-1's.

I refuse to go to the online version. Also so glad last year was the end of K-1s. Employee ownership where you take a loan to purchase the stake and use the distributions to pay the loan and taxes is just a bonus with way more paperwork

We've been filing online with H&R Block software for as long as I can remember and did so for the Fed's again this year.  It's so flippin' easy...and as cheap as it can be, really...

This year though, I had to file state taxes in two states...and both had to be hard copies.  Illinois because we had not filed there in the past 3 years, and Virginia because I had Fidelity withhold 40% of an IRA RMD.

Both state returns were mailed 2 day USPS Priority Mail...on Monday, February 9th...and neither has been delivered...

My experience with priority mail and taxes is you may never get the confirmation from USPS.

Good to know...

I usually roll over the bulk of our refund but I'll ask for enough back to know they got and approved the return when that small bit of refund shows up in the bank account.

Illinois wouldn't do direct deposit for us either, so I get to rely on USPS for that as well.

I recently read that there was a federal law change to the US Post Office regarding tax filings. Mailing a return no longer guarantees that it will have a post mark that day. It may be delivered from a postal box to a regional post office, which applies the post mark date when... it gets around to it.

So a tax advisor recommended making mail filings several days earlier than the required dates, such as April 15, October 15 with an extension or other dates.

It's not a law change. It's a USPS change of policy. Has lots of implications beyond taxes. Really, anything that used to rely on proof of mailing by a given date. Sweepstakes, other claims, vote by mail, etc...
