The minor leaguers wil play through any strike next year.  Just not anyone on 40 man roster

Fitz-Gerald is playing 2B and SS, sharing with a 26 year old minor league vet. The question: will Fitz-Gerald be able to take over SS at Rochester next year? Another year at Harrisburg to learn to hit? Is he Ronny Cruz? Or Kevin Made?

Keith Law says today:

Infielder Devin Fitz-Gerald, who came over to Washington from the Texas Rangers in the MacKenzie Gore trade, started the year on fire in High-A Wilmington, hitting eight homers on a 10-game road trip in the first half of May, but he’s been awful for three months now, including his promotion to Double A. He’s hitting .220/.296/.293 in 49 games for Harrisburg, and he’s swinging much more uphill now than he was at the start of the year, which is producing more swing-and-miss without more production to balance it out. It’s like watching a completely different player from the one I saw in April.

The power surge was always suspect; he’s a smaller guy and his batted-ball data did not support a massive increase in power output. I think he needs to reset his swing and approach to where he was before that fateful road trip, focusing on hard contact wherever it goes rather than trying to lift and pull everything.

does he say when he  last saw  him? Because it looks like he may have accomplished the reset since 8/12 (his past 12 games). Back to a .227  ISO on a .364 average, with a 9.6 BB%.  1.033 OPS. Just 52 PAs, but what is interesting is that it looks like a clear improvement from his start at AA.

Last Tuesday, it seems. Law went to Reading to watch Mets prospects.

That Reading game started at 11 am, so I doubled up and drove down to Double-A Harrisburg (Nationals’ affiliate) for the night game against Chesapeake (Orioles’ affiliate), which had a great pitching matchup of two lefties: Caden Hunter (Orioles) and Alex Clemmey (Nats).

Last Tuesday, it seems. Law went to Reading to watch Mets prospects.

Tuesday  8/5, it seems. That's when Clemmey pitched against Chesapeake and Fitz-Gerald played as well. DFG had just been off for 9 days (last played  7/26). He played poorly that Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday (8/7), then sat until for 4 more days before 8/12 and the start of the streak he's been on recently.

I will guess there's  something different in what he's doing now. The turnaround is too dramatic. When he had that stretch of 2 and half  weeks only playing 3 games, they may have had him  working on the kind of changes Law wanted to see.

heh. Gata and I have been  on this for a while.

Since coming back from getting hit in the mouth (that is, 8/12 forward), he has been surging:

10 G, 43 PA, .361 / .442 / .556, 2 HR, 9.3 BB%, 23.3 K%. BABIP has been good to him  (.440), but the ISO is back in line with the rest of his career minors numbers. Let's see if he can finish strong over the next 3 series.

heh. Gata and I have been  on this for a while.

He was in a 1-24 slump when he was promoted to Harrisburg. Then AA pitchers abused him for all of June. Something like a.380 OPS, July saw his OPS gain about 300 points ,  and now .880 in August. Looks like a 21 year old that’ll be ready for AAA next season. Be nice to see him in Arizona.
