Off topic and probably will get moved, but I don't see anything that says she doesn't have insurance. Even if she does, cancer treatments are stupidly expensive and insurance doesn't pick up the entire cost. Medical bills are a primary cause of people declaring bankruptcy. It's complete horsecrap but welcome to healthcare in America.

Sometimes they have out of pocket maximums but it’s still a chunk of change. When I had a series of eye surgeries a few years ago (before Medicare) I paid quite a bit for them.  It can kill you if you have no savings or no ability to borrow to pay.

a lot of folks have high deductible policies now as well. $20k out of pocket per year for us for my wife's cancer treatments, then 20% of remaining costs.
