12:46 philly: Devin Fitz-Gerald has done nothing but hit HRs since you tagged him with 40 game power and a modest 45. If you’re wrong do you think there’s something in his approach or contact ability that you are just not seeing for whatever reason?12:46 Halve12: Devin Fitz-Gerald has to be moving to AA soon, hopefully an up arrow the rest of the season.12:47 Eric A Longenhagen: Certainly looking like i underrated the pop, just a product of seeing him when it was 35 degrees (he said sheepsihly)?
I know DFG's bat is the talk of the town, but can anyone give me an assessment on his ability as a fielder?
He has fringy speed but is a savvy baserunner who gets to grounders in the middle infield. A shortstop in high school, he's better suited for second base in pro ball with his range and average arm, and he has the quick hands to be effective on the double-play pivot.
Graceful body control, creativity, and a well-calibrated internal clock allow him to make crafty plays at shortstop, but his twitch, range, and the quality and quickness of his actions are all at least a shade beneath the average big leaguer’s.
Devin Fitz-Gerald (INF)Current level (age): High-A Wilmington (20)The Athletic’s rank: Preseason No. 12 in the Nats’ Top 20, expected to have a spot in Keith Law’s next Top 100What he’s doing: Lifting the ballWhat it means: He’s a Top 100 prospect nowThose who were bearish on Fitz-Gerald saw a small player who needed to add strength. When the Nationals evaluated Fitz-Gerald ahead of the MacKenzie Gore trade this winter, they saw a diligent worker and intelligent hitter with traits that were hard to teach. This, though? He has an OPS over 1.000. His 12 homers are tied for the most in the system. He is pulling more baseballs in the air without sacrificing his exceptional bat-to-ball skills. He will still have to add strength in future years, but it hasn’t been any sort of issue yet. Why?The Nationals have told him to — pardon the language — “get naked” early in counts, which means he should swing out of his clothes (or swing with intent) early in his at-bats before shortening up with two strikes. Teammate Ethan Petry played with Detroit Tigers rookie Kevin McGonigle in the Arizona Fall League, and said Fitz-Gerald’s approach, skills and consistency are strikingly similar.
