Matthew Cappucci (atmospheric scientist):
Quote
DMV gang – here's what you need to know for MONDAY's severe weather threat:
– ROUND 1 might include a couple supercells w/tornado threat from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
– ROUND 2 is a squall line with widespread straight-line winds (60-75 mph) and a maybe couple embedded spin-up tornadoes

Kammerer’s latest:
Quote
Weather Alert!! The Storm Prediction Center now has our area under a Moderate risk for severe storms and Tornadoes! This is level 4 of 5! This is rare and has only happened a few times in the last 15-20 years. This means we will have a good chance to see Tornadoes in our area tomorrow afternoon and we will most likely be put under a Tornado watch by about 1pm tomorrow. The storms will move though between 2-6pm and into the metro between 3-5! Make sure you are weather ready and if a Tornado Warning is issued for your area, you will get an alert on your phone. This means you need to take cover until the storm passes. Damaging winds are likely tomorrow and you don’t want to get caught outside when these storm roll through.

Gonna find out later today if "I have to bring all the crap from my front lawn into the garage before the tornado starts" is a valid use of situational telework.

First line of storms starting to enter Culpepper/Fauquier now, already there has been a tornado warning in Culpepper. Looks like the brunt of this first round is following Route 15 and will move up into Loudoun and Frederick Counties.

Bigger storms due to arrive around 3PM.

We're getting gusty winds now in Western Prince William.

Lots of nesting birds with eggs right now  :(

About an hour ago, I went outside to move a few things on our deck in anticipation of severe storms this afternoon. My wife has a small planter way back on the deck railing in a sheltered corner near our neighbor's wall. When I went to look at the planter to decide whether to move it, I thought I saw a face looking at me. Got a little closer and a mourning dove suddenly flew away. Sure enough, there are two eggs in the planter and the bird was using it as a nest. So I didn't move the planter because I figure if I do, the bird won't come back. I hope the wind doesn't do any damage to it this afternoon.

Gonna find out later today if "I have to bring all the crap from my front lawn into the garage before the tornado starts" is a valid use of situational telework.

We were all given the option of unscheduled telework today and I took it alongside almost all my coworkers. The few strivers who did make it into the office were all promptly sent home at mid-day.

Looks like the 2nd round of storms burned up their energy in North Carolina and won't be much of a threat here. This was a possibility that Cappucci and others suggested was possible yesterday.

Other than some tornado warnings this morning and flooding north of dc, the storm was a bust.

These weather forecasters should get a real job...they're about as useful as a Sociology degree...

we have another line of severe storms coming through now, temps dropping about 20-30 degrees as it passes by. Sounds like we're in a car wash.

Yeah, their predictions that there would be tornadoes and severe storms today, and then there being tornadoes and severe storms, really shows how awful they are at their jobs.

We should just shut the NWS down entirely and let the hurricanes, tornadoes, and severe storms surprise people, that would be ideal.

Sigh...

nearly 70mph gusts tonight at Reagan-National. Not a good evening to be flying. Lots of flights diverted.
